Procedia PDF Downloads 161Working Title: Estimating the Power Output of Photovoltaics in Kuwait Using a Monte Carlo Approach
Authors: Mohammad Alshawaf, Rahmat Poudineh, Nawaf Alhajeri
Abstract:
The power generated from photovoltaic (PV) modules is non-dispatchable on demand due to the stochastic nature of solar radiation. The random variations in the measured intensity of solar irradiance are due to clouds and, in the case of arid regions, dust storms which decrease the intensity of intensity of solar irradiance. Therefore, modeling PV power output using average, maximum, or minimum solar irradiance values is inefficient to predict power generation reliably. The overall objective of this paper is to predict the power output of PV modules using Monte Carlo approach based the weather and solar conditions measured in Kuwait. Given the 250 Wp PV module used in study, the average daily power output is 1021 Wh/day. The maximum power was generated in April and the minimum power was generated in January 1187 Wh/day and 823 Wh/day respectively. The certainty of the daily predictions varies seasonally and according to the weather conditions. The output predictions were far more certain in the summer months, for example, the 80% certainty range for August is 89 Wh/day, whereas the 80% certainty range for April is 250 Wh/day.Keywords: Monte Carlo, solar energy, variable renewable energy, Kuwait

Procedia PDF Downloads 343Comparing the Motion of Solar System with Water Droplet Motion to Predict the Future of Solar System
Authors: Areena Bhatti
Abstract:
The geometric arrangement of planet and moon is the result of a self-organizing system. In our solar system, the planets and moons are constantly orbiting around the sun. The aim of this theory is to compare the motion of a solar system with the motion of water droplet when poured into a water body. The basic methodology is to compare both motions to know how they are related to each other. The difference between both systems will be that one is extremely fast, and the other is extremely slow. The role of this theory is that by looking at the fast system we can conclude how slow the system will get to an end. Just like ripples are formed around water droplet that move away from the droplet and water droplet forming those ripples become small in size will tell us how solar system will behave in the same way. So it is concluded that large and small systems can work under the same process but with different motions of time, and motion of the solar system is the slowest form of water droplet motion. Keywords: motion, water, sun, time

Abstract:
With the improvement of the performance and complexity of modern equipment, automatic test system (ATS) becomes widely used for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. However, the conventional ATS mainly works in a serial mode, and lacks the ability of testing several equipments at the same time. That leads to low test efficiency and ATS redundancy. Especially for a large majority of equipment under test, the conventional ATS cannot meet the requirement of efficient testing. To reduce the support resource and increase test efficiency, we propose a method of design for the parallel test based on the embedded system in this paper. Firstly, we put forward the general framework of the parallel test system, and the system contains a central management system (CMS) and several distributed test subsystems (DTS). Then we give a detailed design of the system. For the hardware of the system, we use embedded architecture to design DTS. For the software of the system, we use test program set to improve the test adaption. By deploying the parallel test system, the time to test five devices is now equal to the time to test one device in the past. Compared with the conventional test system, the proposed test system reduces the size and improves testing efficiency. This is of great significance for equipment to be put into operation swiftly. Finally, we take an industrial control system as an example to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The result shows that the method is reasonable, and the efficiency is improved up to 500%.Keywords: parallel test, embedded system, automatic test system, automatic test system (ATS), central management system, central management system (CMS), distributed test subsystems, distributed test subsystems (DTS)

Authors: Zhou Yingkun, Xu Guorui, Wei Siming, Huang Yongzhang
Abstract:
With the increasing of the penetration of renewable energy in power system, the whole inertia of the power system is declining, which will endanger the frequency stability of the power system. In order to enhance the inertia, virtual synchronous generator (VSG) has been proposed. In addition, the motor-generator pair (MGP) system is proposed to enhance grid inertia. Both of them need additional equipment to provide instantaneous energy, so the economic problem should be considered. In this paper, the basic working principle of MGP system and VSG are introduced firstly. Then, the technical characteristics and economic investment of MGP/VSG are compared by calculation and simulation. The results show that the MGP system can provide same inertia with less cost than VSG.Keywords: high renewable energy penetration, inertia of power system, motor-generator pair (MGP) system, virtual synchronous generator (VSG), techno-economic analysis
Procedia PDF Downloads 459Study of Exciton Binding Energy in Photovoltaic Polymers and Non-Fullerene Acceptors
Authors: Ho-Wa Li, Sai-Wing Tsang
Abstract:
The excitonic effect in organic semiconductors plays a key role in determining the electronic devices performance. Strong exciton binding energy has been regarded as the detrimental factor limiting the further improvement in organic photovoltaic cells. To the best of our knowledge, only limited reported can be found in measuring the exciton binding energy in organic photovoltaic materials. Conventional sophisticated approach using photoemission spectroscopy (UPS and IPES) would limit the wide access of the investigation. Here, we demonstrate a facile approach to study the electrical and optical quantum efficiencies of a series of conjugated photovoltaic polymer, fullerene and non-fullerene materials. Quantitative values of the exciton binding energy in those prototypical materials were obtained with concise photovoltaic device structure. And the extracted binding energies have excellent agreement with those determined by the conventional photoemission technique. More importantly, our findings can provide valuable information on the excitonic dissociation in the first excited state. Particularly, we find that the high binding energy of some non-fullerene acceptors limits the combination of polymer acceptors for efficiency exciton dissociation. The results bring insight into the engineering of excitonic effect for the development of efficient organic photovoltaic cells. Keywords: organic photovoltaics, quantum efficiency, exciton binding energy, device physics

Authors: Sue-Yi Chen, Wei-Chun Hsu, Jon-Yiew Gan
Abstract:
Si-based double-junction tandem solar cells have become a popular research topic because of the advantages of low manufacturing cost and high energy conversion efficiency. However, there is no set of calculations to select the appropriate top cell materials. Therefore, this paper will propose a simple but practical selection method. First of all, we calculate the S-Q limit and explain the reasons for developing tandem solar cells. Secondly, we calculate the theoretical energy conversion efficiency of the double-junction tandem solar cells while combining the commercial monocrystalline Si and materials' practical efficiency to consider the actual situation. Finally, we conservatively conclude that if considering 75% performance of the theoretical energy conversion efficiency of the top cell, the suitable bandgap energy range will fall between 1.38eV to 2.5eV. Besides, we also briefly describe some improvements of several proper materials, CZTS, CdSe, Cu2O, ZnTe, and CdS, hoping that future research can select and manufacture high-efficiency Si-based tandem solar cells based on this paper successfully. Most importantly, our calculation method is not limited to silicon solely. If other materials’ performances match or surpass silicon's ability in the future, researchers can also apply this set of deduction processes. Keywords: high-efficiency solar cells, material selection, Si-based double-junction solar cells, Tandem solar cells, photovoltaics.

Abstract:
Taiwan's solar photovoltaic target in 2025 is 20 GW, of which the fish-electricity symbiosis target is 4 GW. In the future, many solar photovoltaic installations may cause local environmental or social impacts. Therefore, the Taiwan government inspects the fish-electricity symbiosis to reduce the impact of solar photovoltaics on the local environment or society. This stuy takes the symbiosis of fishery and electricity in Kaohsiung City as an example to explore Taiwan's environmental and social inspection practices. It mainly analyzes the two aspects of environmental ecology and social economy. The results show that the environmental inspection is mainly through site surveys, ecological information mapping, on-site interviews, and public consultation meetings. Social inspection mainly includes document analysis, on-site interviews, site surveys, expert discussions, and public consultations to identify possible local problems. Although the government had recognized the local issues, the future status may also change. It is recommended that future photoelectric companies should reconfirm the current situation of development sites when applying for the installation and propose countermeasures to solve the problem. Keywords: taiwan, fish-electricity symbiosis, environment, society, inspection

Authors: Gwanghee Heo, Geonhyeok Bang, Chunggil Kim, Chinok Lee
Abstract:
This paper attempts to develop a wireless feedback control system as a primary step eventually toward a bio-inspired structure system where inanimate structure behaves like a life form autonomously. It is a standalone wireless control system which is supposed to measure externally caused structural responses, analyze structural state from acquired data, and take its own action on the basis of the analysis with an embedded logic. For an experimental examination of its effectiveness, we applied it on a model of two-span bridge and performed a wireless control test. Experimental tests have been conducted for comparison on both the wireless and the wired system under the conditions of Un-control, Passive-off, Passive-on, and Lyapunov control algorithm. By proving the congruence of the test result of the wireless feedback control system with the wired control system, its control performance was proven to be effective. Besides, it was found to be economical in energy consumption and also autonomous by means of a command algorithm embedded into it, which proves its basic capacity as a bio-inspired system. Keywords: structural vibration control, wireless system, MR damper, feedback control, embedded system

Procedia PDF Downloads 592Powering Circular Agriculture: Economic Analysis of Renewable Energy Integration for Sustainable Poultry Farming
Authors: Parisa Moghaddam
Abstract:
The significance of this study lies in its comprehensive exploration of renewable energy integration in poultry farming, a highly energy-intensive sector, to address pressing global food and energy crisis. As population growth amplifies these issues, innovative solutions are crucial for sustainable food production and energy security. This research investigated the potential of renewable energy sources, particularly anaerobic digestion and solar photovoltaics, to reduce energy consumption, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, promote circular economy principles in agriculture, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. By examining case studies from various countries and analyzing the economic and environmental benefits of these technologies, the study aimed to provide practical insights for farmers, stakeholders, and policymakers. Ultimately, this research developed a conceptual tool and framework to facilitate the transition towards more sustainable and circular agricultural practices, addressing critical gaps in renewable energy integration within agricultural systems, and aiming to attract potential investors and gain traction for sustainable practices. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses to provide a comprehensive evaluation framework for renewable energy integration in agriculture. Key components included a case study analysis utilizing data from a poultry operation in Armenia, an anaerobic digestion plant in Pakistan, and a solar photovoltaic project in Lebanon. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to understand the current state of renewable energy adoption, challenges, and opportunities in poultry farming. For quantitative analysis, the study used Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) to assign monetary values to costs and benefits of renewable energy investment projects, including economic valuation, financial budgeting, and cash flow considerations to compare two modes of renewable energy sources. The qualitative approach utilized Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) to evaluate and prioritize alternatives based on multiple criteria, incorporating both objective and subjective factors beyond economic viability. Additionally, sensitivity analysis was conducted for more accurate modeling. Key findings revealed that on-farm anaerobic digester plants focusing on biogas and digestate production, rather than electricity generation, demonstrated economic viability with a Net Present Value of $621,386.3 and an Internal Rate of Return of 149%. Solar PV implementation showed moderate economic potential. The Multi-Criteria Decision-Making analysis, incorporating economic, technical, environmental, and social criteria, ranked anaerobic digesters (0.91) higher than solar PV (0.64) for agricultural applications. The findings suggest that small-scale anaerobic digesters offer the most promising pathway for agricultural waste valorization and renewable energy generation. However, successful implementation requires addressing limitations such as financial uncertainties, lack of accurate data, industry collaboration, and policy support. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on circular economy implementation in agriculture, offering practical insights for sustainable development in similar economic contexts. Keywords: circular economy, renewable energy integration, sustainable poultry farming, anaerobic digestion, solar photovoltaics, sustainability, cost-benefit analysis, multi-criteria decision making, economic modeling

Abstract:
The conventional Wi-Fi back scatter system can only process one-to-one communication between the Wi-Fi reader and the Wi-Fi tag. For improvement of throughput of the conventional system, this paper proposes the multi-to-multi communication system. In the proposed system, the interference by the multi-to-multi communication is effectively cancelled by the orthogonal multiple access based on the identification code of the tag. Although the overhead is generated by the procedure for the multi-to-multi communication, because the procedure is processed by the Wi-Fi protocol, the overhead is insignificant for the entire communication procedure. From the numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed system has nearly proportional increased throughput in according to the number of the tag that simultaneously participates in communication. Keywords: backscatter, multi-to-multi communication, orthogonality, Wi-Fi

Abstract:
Flexible dye sensitized solar cells have emerged as the promising technology for wearable electronics and energy storage due to their flexibility, lightweight and facile fabrication. However, the expensive platinum (Pt) has limited the practical applications and roll to roll processing of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Printable carbon-based photovoltaics have attracted great attention due to their potential for large-scale applications for powering wearable electronic devices. It is challenging to incorporate various characteristics together such as mechanical stability, solution printability, conductivity, electrocatalytic activity, and heat-generating properties in the flexible fabric-based electrode system. Thus this research study is focused on the design and synthesis of a flexible and mechanically stable counter electrode based on printable carbon composite using functionalized multi walled carbon nanotubes and Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) conducting polymer. The composite exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity, excellent conductivity, high surface area and good durability thus surpassing the conventional Pt electrodes. The acid functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (F-CNT) exhibited larger surface area thus promoting the greater absorption of electrolyte. Different compositions of carbon composites were synthesized by varying the concentration of conducting polymer. The uniform deposition of carbon composite onto cotton fabrics using an optimized doctor blade technique resulted in crack free and durable coating. Our proposed material printed on woven cotton fabric exhibited remarkable conductivity of 2–5 Ω and lower charge transfer resistance RCT = 2.69 Ω. These flexible and conductive electrodes are durable and can withstand repetitive bending and flexing cycles. The proposed research paves the way for solution printable high-conductivity, lightness, and flexibility high-electrocatalytic activity performance on woven fabric for wearable electronics. Keywords: MWCNTS, DSSCs, wearable electronics, carbon composite, PEDOT:PSS

Abstract:
Here, we study the characteristic feature of conventional (ON-OFF keying) and soliton based transmission system. We consider 20 Gbps transmission system implemented with Conventional Single Mode Fiber (C-SMF) to examine the role of Gaussian pulse which is the characteristic of conventional propagation and hyperbolic-secant pulse which is the characteristic of soliton propagation in it. We note the influence of these pulses with respect to different dispersion lengths and soliton period in conventional and soliton system, respectively, and evaluate the system performance in terms of quality factor. From the analysis, we could prove that the soliton pulse has more consistent performance even for long distance without dispersion compensation than the conventional system as it is robust to dispersion. For the length of transmission of 200 Km, soliton system yielded Q of 33.958 while the conventional system totally exhausted with Q=0.Keywords: dispersion length, retrun-to-zero (rz), soliton, soliton period, q-factor
