Abstract:
This paper aims to highlight the importance of the application of the IEC 61724 standard in the study of the performance analysis of photovoltaic power plants on a monthly and annual scale. Likewise, the comparison of two photovoltaic power plants with two different climates was carried out in order to determine the effect of climatic parameters on the analysis of photovoltaic performances. All data from the Ain Skhouna and Adrar photovoltaic power plants for 2018 and the data from the Saida1 field for one month in 2019 were used. The results of the performance analysis according to the indicated standard show that the Saida PV power plant performs better than the Adrar PV power plant, which is due to the effect of increasing the ambient temperature. Increasing ambient temperature increases losses decreases system efficiency and performance ratio. It presents a key element in the proper functioning of PV plants. Keywords: pv power plants, IEC 61724 norm, grid connected pv, algeria

Authors: Rizwan Alam, Ikhtiar Khan, Aqib Iqbal
Abstract:
Plants are naturally exposed to a wide variety of environmental stresses. The stresses may be biotic or/and abiotic. These environmental stresses have adverse effects on photosynthesis, water relation and nutrients uptake of plants. Fertilization of plants with exogenous minerals can enhance the drought tolerance in plants. In this experiment, canola (Brassica napus) was treated with solutions of calcium nitrate in different concentrations before the imposition of drought stress for 10 days. It was observed that drought stress decreased the tissue-K, Ca and K/Ca ratio of canola seedlings. The tissue-carbon and nitrogen contents were also depressed by the drought stress. Application of calcium nitrate, however, could alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress by showing a positive effect on all the aforementioned parameters. Keywords: Brassica napus, calcium, carbon, potassium

Authors: Sizwe Dlamini
Abstract:
There seems to be little that has been done to investigate cartoons from a literary criticism point of view. Cartoons have been given attention mostly in semiotics as compared to other scholarly perspectives. The aim of this article is to attempt to bridge this gap by observing cartoons through the post-colonial approach as a literary theory. Even though the post-colonial approach has been previously adopted to critique the prose genre and other genres in the African indigenous languages of South Africa, there seems to be no study that has used this approach to analyse the cartoon genre. This study is thus believed to be valuable to scientific knowledge in this sense. The study adopts textual analysis as a qualitative research technique since cartoons are the primary sources of data collection. Through the application of the post-colonial theory, the findings of the study demonstrate that there are depicted socio-cultural, socio-economic, and political issues in Mngadi’s editorial cartoons. These include. Keywords: editorial cartoons, post-colonial theory, literary criticism, turmoil

Authors: Eiman Nour
Abstract:
The rising interest in harvesting power is because of the capabilities application of expanding self-powered systems based on nanostructures. Using renewable and self-powered sources is necessary for the growth of green electronics and could be of the capability to wireless sensor networks. The ambient mechanical power is among the ample sources for various power harvesting device configurations that are published. In this work, we design and fabricate a paper-based nanogenerator (NG) utilizing piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) grown hydrothermally on a paper substrate. The fabricated NG can harvest ambient mechanical energy from various kinds of human motions, such as handwriting. The fabricated NG from a single ZnO NWs/PVDF-TrFE NG has been used firstly as handwriting-driven NG. The mechanical pressure applied on the paper platform while handwriting is harvested by the NG to deliver electrical energy; depending on the mode of handwriting, a maximum harvested voltage of 4.8 V was obtained. Keywords: nanostructure, zinc oxide, nanogenerator, energy harvesting
Procedia PDF Downloads 695953 Effect of Fault Depth on Near-Fault Peak Ground Velocity
Authors: Yanyan Yu, Haiping Ding, Pengjun Chen, Yiou Sun
Abstract:
Fault depth is an important parameter to be determined in ground motion simulation, and peak ground velocity (PGV) demonstrates good application prospect. Using numerical simulation method, the variations of distribution and peak value of near-fault PGV with different fault depth were studied in detail, and the reason of some phenomena were discussed. The simulation results show that the distribution characteristics of PGV of fault-parallel (FP) component and fault-normal (FN) component are distinctly different; the value of PGV FN component is much larger than that of FP component. With the increase of fault depth, the distribution region of the FN component strong PGV moves forward along the rupture direction, while the strong PGV zone of FP component becomes gradually far away from the fault trace along the direction perpendicular to the strike. However, no matter FN component or FP component, the strong PGV distribution area and its value are both quickly reduced with increased fault depth. The results above suggest that the fault depth have significant effect on both FN component and FP component of near-fault PGV.Keywords: fault depth, near-fault, PGV, numerical simulation

Authors: Jamison Duckworth, Shankarachary Ragi
Abstract:
Detection and segmentation of wildfire smoke plumes from remote sensing imagery are being pursued as a solution for early fire detection and response. Smoke plume detection can be automated and made robust by the application of artificial intelligence methods. Specifically, in this study, the deep learning approach Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (RCNN) is being proposed to learn smoke patterns across different spectral bands. This method is proposed to separate the smoke regions from the background and return masks placed over the smoke plumes. Multispectral data was acquired using NASA’s Earthdata and WorldView and services and satellite imagery. Due to the use of multispectral bands along with the three visual bands, we show that Mask R-CNN can be applied to distinguish smoke plumes from clouds and other landscape features that resemble smoke. Keywords: deep learning, mask-RCNN, smoke plumes, spectral bands

Authors: Esra Turker, Umit Hakan Yildiz, Ahu Arslan Yildiz
Abstract:
The key of regenerative medicine is mimicking natural three dimensional (3D) microenvironment of tissues by utilizing appropriate biomaterials. In this study, a synthetic biodegradable polymer; poly (L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLLCL) and a natural polymer; collagen was used to mimic the biochemical structure of the natural extracellular matrix (ECM), and by means of electrospinning technique the real physical structure of ECM has mimicked. PLLCL/Collagen biocomposite scaffolds enables cell attachment, proliferation and nutrient transport through fabrication of micro to nanometer scale nanofibers. Biocomposite materials are commonly preferred due to limitations of physical and biocompatible properties of natural and synthetic materials. Combination of both materials improves the strength, degradation and biocompatibility of scaffold. Literature studies have shown that collagen is mostly solved with heavy chemicals, which is not suitable for cell culturing. To overcome this problem, a new approach has been developed in this study where polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is used as co-electrospinning agent. PVP is preferred due to its water solubility, so PLLCL/collagen biocomposite scaffold can be easily and rapidly produced. Hydrolytic and enzymatic biodegradation as well as mechanical strength of scaffolds were examined in vitro. Cell adhesion, proliferation and cell morphology characterization studies have been performed as well. Further, on-chip drug screening analysis has been performed over 3D tumor models. Overall, the developed biocomposite scaffold was used for 3D tumor model formation and obtained results confirmed that developed model could be used for drug screening studies to predict clinical efficacy of a drug. Keywords: biomaterials, 3D cell culture, drug screening, electrospinning, lab-on-a-chip, tissue engineering

Authors: Maxim A. Kadatskiy, Konstantin V. Khishchenko
Abstract:
Iron alloys are widespread components in various types of structural materials which are exposed to intensive thermal and mechanical loads. Various quantum-statistical cell models with the approximation of self-consistent field can be used for the prediction of the behavior of these materials under extreme conditions. The application of these models is even more valid, the higher the temperature and the density of matter. Results of Hugoniot calculation for iron alloys in the framework of three quantum-statistical (the Thomas–Fermi, the Thomas–Fermi with quantum and exchange corrections and the Hartree–Fock–Slater) models are presented. Results of quantum-statistical calculations are compared with results from other reliable models and available experimental data. It is revealed a good agreement between results of calculation and experimental data for terra pascal pressures. Advantages and disadvantages of this approach are shown. Keywords: alloy, Hugoniot, iron, terapascal pressure

Authors: Anastasia K. Eleftheriadou, Athanasios Sfetsos, Nikolaos Gounaris
Abstract:
The present work examines the suitability of a seasonal forecasting model downscaled with a very high spatial resolution in order to assess the energy performance and requirements of buildings. The application of the developed model is applied on Greece for a period and with a forecast horizon of 5 months in the future. Greece, as a country in the middle of a financial crisis and facing serious societal challenges, is also very sensitive to climate changes. The commonly used method for the correlation of climate change with the buildings energy consumption is the concept of Degree Days (DD). This method can be applied to heating and cooling systems for a better management of environmental, economic and energy crisis, and can be used as medium (3-6 months) planning tools in order to predict the building needs and country’s requirements for residential energy use. Keywords: downscaled seasonal models, degree days, energy performance

Authors: Richard Tanaka, Ying Zhu
Abstract:
This paper studies a few randomized algorithms in application-layer peer-to-peer networks. The significant gain in scalability and resilience that peer-to-peer networks provide has made them widely used and adopted in many real-world distributed systems and applications. The unique properties of peer-to-peer networks make them particularly suitable for randomized algorithms such as random walks and gossip algorithms. Instead of simulations of peer-to-peer networks, we leverage the Docker virtual container technology to develop implementations of the peer-to-peer networks and these distributed randomized algorithms running on top of them. We can thus analyze their behaviour and performance in realistic settings. We further consider the problem of identifying high-risk bottleneck links in the network with the objective of improving the resilience and reliability of peer-to-peer networks. We propose a randomized algorithm to solve this problem and evaluate its performance by simulations. Keywords: distributed randomized algorithms, peer-to-peer networks, virtual container technology, resilient networks

Authors: Tianyu Gao
Abstract:
Digital architectures use computer-aided design, programming, simulation, and imaging to create virtual forms and physical structures. Today's customers want to know more about their buildings. They want an automatic thermostat to learn their behavior and contact them, such as the doors and windows they want to open with a mobile app. Therefore, the architectural display form is more closely related to the customer's experience. Based on the purpose of building informationization, this paper studies the steel structure design based on BIM. Taking the Zigan office building in Hangzhou as an example, it is divided into four parts, namely, the digital design modulus of the steel structure, the node analysis of the steel structure, the digital production and construction of the steel structure. Through the application of BIM software, the architectural design can be synergized, and the building components can be informationized. Not only can the architectural design be feedback in the early stage, but also the stability of the construction can be guaranteed. In this way, the monitoring of the entire life cycle of the building and the meeting of customer needs can be realized. Keywords: digital architectures, BIM, steel structure, architectural design

Procedia PDF Downloads 2005939 Navigating the Nexus of HIV/AIDS Care: Leveraging Statistical Insight to Transform Clinical Practice and Patient Outcomes
Authors: Nahashon Mwirigi
Abstract:
The management of HIV/AIDS is a global challenge, demanding precise tools to predict disease progression and guide tailored treatment. CD4 cell count dynamics, a crucial immune function indicator, play an essential role in understanding HIV/AIDS progression and enhancing patient care through effective modeling. While several models assess disease progression, existing methods often fall short in capturing the complex, non-linear nature of HIV/AIDS, especially across diverse demographics. A need exists for models that balance predictive accuracy with clinical applicability, enabling individualized care strategies based on patient-specific progression rates. This study utilizes patient data from Kenyatta National Hospital (2003–2014) to model HIV/AIDS progression across six CD4-defined states. The Exponential, 2-Parameter Weibull, and 3-Parameter Weibull models are employed to analyze failure rates and explore progression patterns by age and gender. Model selection is based on Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) to identify models best representing disease progression variability across demographic groups. The 3-Parameter Weibull model emerges as the most effective, accurately capturing HIV/AIDS progression dynamics, particularly by incorporating delayed progression effects. This model reflects age and gender-specific variations, offering refined insights into patient trajectories and facilitating targeted interventions. One key finding is that older patients progress more slowly through CD4-defined stages, with a delayed onset of advanced stages. This suggests that older patients may benefit from extended monitoring intervals, allowing providers to optimize resources while maintaining consistent care. Recognizing slower progression in this demographic helps clinicians reduce unnecessary interventions, prioritizing care for faster-progressing groups. Gender-based analysis reveals that female patients exhibit more consistent progression, while male patients show greater variability. This highlights the need for gender-specific treatment approaches, as men may require more frequent assessments and adaptive treatment plans to address their variable progression. Tailoring treatment by gender can improve outcomes by addressing distinct risk patterns in each group. The model’s ability to account for both accelerated and delayed progression equips clinicians with a robust tool for estimating the duration of each disease stage. This supports individualized treatment planning, allowing clinicians to optimize antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens based on demographic factors and expected disease trajectories. Aligning ART timing with specific progression patterns can enhance treatment efficacy and adherence. The model also has significant implications for healthcare systems, as its predictive accuracy enables proactive patient management, reducing the frequency of advanced-stage complications. For resource limited providers, this capability facilitates strategic intervention timing, ensuring that high-risk patients receive timely care while resources are allocated efficiently. Anticipating progression stages enhances both patient care and resource management, reinforcing the model’s value in supporting sustainable HIV/AIDS healthcare strategies. This study underscores the importance of models that capture the complexities of HIV/AIDS progression, offering insights to guide personalized, data-informed care. The 3-Parameter Weibull model’s ability to accurately reflect delayed progression and demographic risk variations presents a valuable tool for clinicians, supporting the development of targeted interventions and resource optimization in HIV/AIDS management. Keywords: HIV/AIDS progression, 3-parameter Weibull model, CD4 cell count stages, antiretroviral therapy, demographic-specific modeling

Authors: Man Guo
Abstract:
This paper delves into the intricate interplay between spatial morphology and spatial cognition in Lidukou Village, utilizing a combined approach of spatial syntax and field data. Through a comparative analysis of the gathered data, it emerges that the spatial integration level of Lidukou Village exhibits a direct positive correlation with the spatial cognitive preferences of its inhabitants. Specifically, the areas within the village that exhibit a higher degree of spatial cognition are predominantly distributed along the axis primarily defined by Shuxiang Road. However, the accessibility to historical relics remains limited, lacking a coherent systemic relationship. To address the morphological challenges faced by Lidukou Village, this study proposes optimization strategies that encompass diverse perspectives, including the refinement of spatial mechanisms and the shaping of strategic spatial nodes. Keywords: traditional villages, spatial syntax, spatial integration degree, morphological problem

Abstract:
Introduction: In Germany, depression ranks among the top ten diseases with the highest disease burden and often occurs with comorbidities. Collaborative Care (CC), a concept developed in the United States for the primary care management of chronic diseases, has been identified as an efficient model for the treatment of depression in general medicine. A recent meta-analysis highlights research gaps regarding CC in patients with psychiatric multimorbidity. The highest prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in depression is observed in anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorders. Methods: We conducted a literature search following the PRISMA guidelines with three components: Collaborative Care, Depression and randomized controlled trial on the common databases. We focused on the examination of psychiatric comorbidities in depression, specifically Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Results: During the screening process, we identified nine relevant articles related to PTSD, the number of articles related to Substance Use Disorder (SUD) was ten. We examined a total of 8,634 individuals. Our literature review did not reveal any overall significant superiority of the Collaborative Care model compared to Usual Care in patients with depression with comorbid Substance Use Disorder (SUD) or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Discussion: Five studies demonstrate a faster and statistically significant improvement in depression outcomes among patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Currently, several randomized controlled trials on the topic of Collaborative Care in depression with psychiatric comorbidity are ongoing, such as miCare, Claro and COMET.Keywords: Depression, primary care, collaborative care, PTSD, Substance use Disorder

Abstract:
Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a thrombus is formed within a deep vein (most often in the legs). This disease can be deadly if a part or the whole thrombus reaches the lung and causes a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). This disorder, often asymptomatic, has multifactorial causes: immobilization, surgery, pregnancy, age, cancers, and genetic variations. Our project aims to relate the thrombus epidemiology (origins, patient predispositions, PE) to its structure using ultrasound images. Ultrasonography and elastography were collected using Toshiba Aplio 500 at Brest Hospital. This manuscript compares two classification approaches: spectral clustering and scattering operator. The former is based on the graph and matrix theories while the latter cascades wavelet convolutions with nonlinear modulus and averaging operators. Keywords: deep venous thrombosis, ultrasonography, elastography, scattering operator, wavelet, spectral clustering

Authors: E. Rama Devi Jothilingam
Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is now one of the most common non communicable diseases globally. India leads the world with largest number of diabetic subjects earning the title "diabetes capital of the world". In order to reduce the mortality rate, a fuzzy expert system is designed to predict the severity of cardiac and renal problems of diabetic patients using fuzzy logic. Since uncertainty is inherent in medicine, fuzzy logic is used in this research work to remove the inherent fuzziness of linguistic concepts and uncertain status in diabetes mellitus which is the prime cause for the cardiac arrest and renal failure. In this work, the controllable risk factors "blood sugar, insulin, ketones, lipids, obesity, blood pressure and protein/creatinine ratio" are considered as input parameters and the "the stages of cardiac" (SOC)" and the stages of renal" (SORD) are considered as the output parameters. The triangular membership functions are used to model the input and output parameters. The rule base is constructed for the proposed expert system based on the knowledge from the medical experts. Mamdani inference engine is used to infer the information based on the rule base to take major decision in diagnosis. Mean of maximum is used to get a non fuzzy control action that best represent possibility distribution of an inferred fuzzy control action. The proposed system also classifies the patients with high risk and low risk using fuzzy c means clustering techniques so that the patients with high risk are treated immediately. The system is validated with Matlab and is used as a tracking system with accuracy and robustness. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, fuzzy expert system, Mamdani, MATLAB

Abstract:
The reduction of greenhouse gases and pollution emissions is a worldwide environmental issue. The amount of CO₂ released by an aircraft is associated with the amount of fuel burned, so the improvement of engine thermo-mechanical efficiency and specific fuel consumption is a significant technological driver for aviation. Moreover, with the prospect that avgas will be phased out, an engine able to use more available and cheaper fuels is an evident advantage. An advanced aeronautical Diesel engine, because of its high efficiency and ability to use widely available and low-cost jet and diesel fuels, is a promising solution to achieve a more fuel-efficient aircraft. On the other hand, a Diesel engine has generally a higher overall weight, if compared with a gasoline one of same power performances. Fixing the MTOW, Max Take-Off Weight, and the operational payload, this extra-weight reduces the aircraft fuel fraction, partially vinifying the associated benefits. Therefore, an effort in weight saving manufacturing technologies is likely desirable. In this work, in order to achieve the mentioned goals, innovative Electron Beam Melting – EBM, Additive Manufacturing – AM technologies were applied to a two-stroke, common rail, GF56 Diesel engine, developed by the CMD Company for aeronautic applications. For this purpose, a consortium of academic, research and industrial partners, including CMD Company, Italian Aerospace Research Centre – CIRA, University of Naples Federico II and the University of Salerno carried out a technological project, funded by the Italian Minister of Education and Research – MIUR. The project aimed to optimize the baseline engine in order to improve its performance and increase its airworthiness features. This project was focused on the definition, design, development, and application of enabling technologies for performance improvement of GF56. Weight saving of this engine was pursued through the application of EBM-AM technologies and in particular using Arcam AB A2X machine, available at CIRA. The 3D printer processes titanium alloy micro-powders and it was employed to realize new connecting rods of the GF56 engine with an additive-oriented design approach. After a preliminary investigation of EBM process parameters and a thermo-mechanical characterization of titanium alloy samples, additive manufactured, innovative connecting rods were fabricated. These engine elements were structurally verified, topologically optimized, 3D printed and suitably post-processed. Finally, the overall performance improvement, on a typical General Aviation aircraft, was estimated, substituting the conventional engine with the optimized GF56 propulsion system. Keywords: aeronautic propulsion, additive manufacturing, performance improvement, weight saving, piston engine

Authors: Aydin Teymourifar, Gurkan Ozturk
Abstract:
In this paper, a hybrid Tabu Search (TS) algorithm is suggested for the multi-objective job shop scheduling problems (MO-JSSPs). The algorithm integrates several shifting bottleneck based neighborhood structures with the Giffler & Thompson algorithm, which improve efficiency of the search. Diversification and intensification are provided with local and global left shift algorithms application and also new semi-active, active, and non-delay schedules creation. The suggested algorithm is tested in the MO-JSSPs benchmarks from the literature based on the Pareto optimality concept. Different performances criteria are used for the multi-objective algorithm evaluation. The proposed algorithm is able to find the Pareto solutions of the test problems in shorter time than other algorithm of the literature. Keywords: tabu search, heuristics, job shop scheduling, multi-objective optimization, Pareto optimality

Authors: A. Fazilah, I. Darah, I. Noraznawati
Abstract:
Three different bacteria capable of degrading phenanthrene were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated site. In this study, the phenanthrene-degrading activity by defined monoculture was determined and mixed culture was identified as Acinetobacter sp. P3d, Bacillus sp. P4a and Pseudomonas sp. P6. All bacteria were able to grow in a minimal salt medium saturated with phenanthrene as the sole source of carbon and energy. Phenanthrene degradation efficiencies by different combinations (consortia) of these bacteria were investigated and their phenanthrene degradation was evaluated by gas chromatography. Among the monocultures, Pseudomonas sp. P6 exhibited 58.71% activity compared to Acinetobacter sp. P3d and Bacillus sp. P4a which were 56.97% and 53.05%, respectively after 28 days of cultivation. All consortia showed high phenanthrene elimination which were 95.64, 79.37, 87.19, 79.21% for Consortia A, B, C and D, respectively. The results indicate that all of the bacteria isolated may effectively degrade target chemical and have a promising application in bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soil purposes. Keywords: phenanthrene, consortia, acinetobacter sp. Abstract:
Rehabilitation of dam components such as foundations, buttresses, spillways and overtopping protection require a wide range of construction and design methodologies. Geotechnical Engineering considerations play an important role in the design and construction of foundations of new dams. Much investigation is required to assess and evaluate the existing dams. The application of roller compacting concrete (RCC) has been accepted as a new method for constructing new dams or rehabilitating old ones. In the past 40 years there have been so many changes in the usage of RCC and now it is one of most satisfactory solutions of water and hydropower resource throughout the world. The considerations of rehabilitation and construction of dams might differ due to upstream reservoir and its influence on penetrating and dewatering of downstream, operations requirements and plant layout. One of the advantages of RCC is its rapid placement which allows the dam to be operated quickly. Unlike ordinary concrete it is a drier mix, and stiffs enough for compacting by vibratory rollers. This paper evaluates some different aspects of RCC and focuses on its preparation progress. Keywords: spillway, vibrating consistency, fly ash, water tightness, foundation
