71 An Inverse Docking Approach for Identifying New Potential Anticancer Targets
Authors: Soujanya Pasumarthi
Abstract:
Inverse docking is a relatively new technique that has been used to identify potential receptor targets of small molecules. Our docking software package MDock is well suited for such an application as it is both computationally efficient, yet simultaneously shows adequate results in binding affinity predictions and enrichment tests. As a validation study, we present the first stage results of an inverse-docking study which seeks to identify potential direct targets of PRIMA-1. PRIMA-1 is well known for its ability to restore mutant p53's tumor suppressor function, leading to apoptosis in several types of cancer cells. For this reason, we believe that potential direct targets of PRIMA-1 identified in silico should be experimentally screened for their ability to inhibitcancer cell growth. The highest-ranked human protein of our PRIMA-1 docking results is oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC), which is part of the cholesterol synthetic pathway. The results of two followup experiments which treat OSC as a possible anti-cancer target are promising. We show that both PRIMA-1 and Ro 48-8071, a known potent OSC inhibitor, significantly reduce theviability of BT-474 breast cancer cells relative to normal mammary cells. In addition, like PRIMA-1, we find that Ro 48-8071 results in increased binding of mutant p53 to DNA in BT- 474cells (which highly express p53). For the first time, Ro 48-8071 is shown as a potent agent in killing human breast cancer cells. The potential of OSC as a new target for developing anticancer therapies is worth further investigation. Keywords: inverse docking, in silico screening, protein-ligand interactions, molecular docking

Procedia PDF Downloads 2468 An Introduction to Giulia Annalinda Neglia Viewpoint on Morphology of the Islamic City Using Written Content Analysis Approach
Authors: Mohammad Saber Eslamlou
Abstract:
Morphology of Islamic cities has been extensively studied by researchers of Islamic cities and different theories could be found about it. In this regard, there exist much difference in method of analysis, classification, recognition, confrontation and comparative method of urban morphology. The present paper aims to examine the previous methods, approaches and insights and that how Dr. Giulia Annalinda Neglia dealt with the analysis of morphology of Islamic cities. Neglia is assistant professor in University of Bari, Italy (UNIBA) who has published numerous papers and books on Islamic cities. I introduce her works in the field of morphology of Islamic cities. And then, her thoughts, insights and research methodologies are presented and analyzed in critical perspective. This is a qualitative research on her written works, which have been classified in three major categories. The first category consists mainly of her works on morphology and physical shape of Islamic cities. The results of her works’ review suggest that she has used Moratoria typology in investigating morphology of Islamic cities. Moreover, overall structure of the cities under investigation is often described linear; however, she’s against to define a single framework for the recognition of morphology in Islamic cities. She states that ‘to understand the physical complexity and irregularities in Islamic cities, it is necessary to study the urban fabric by typology method, focusing on transformation processes of the buildings’ form and their surrounding open spaces’ and she believes that fabric of each region in the city follows from the principles of an specific period or urban pattern, in particular, Hellenistic and Roman structures. Furthermore, she believes that it is impossible to understand the morphology of a city without taking into account the obvious and hidden developments associated with it, because form of building and their surrounding open spaces are written history of the city. Keywords: city, Islamic city, Giulia Annalinda Neglia, morphology

Authors: Chiara Di Tucci, Giulia Galati, Giulia Mattei, Valentina Bonanni, Oriana Capri, Renzo D'Amelio, Ludovico Muzii, Pierluigi Benedetti Panici
Abstract:
Objective: Infertility is an increasingly frequent health condition, which may depend on female or male factors. Oxidative stress (OS), resulting from a disrupted balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protective antioxidants, affects the reproductive lifespan of men and women. In this review, we examine if alpha lipoic acid (ALA), among the oral supplements currently in use, has an evidence-based beneficial role in the context of female and male infertility. Methods: We performed a search from English literature using the PubMed database with the following keywords: 'female infertility', 'male infertility', 'semen', 'sperm', 'sub-fertile man', 'alpha-lipoic acid', ' alpha lipoic acid', 'lipoid acid', 'endometriosis', 'chronic pelvic pain', 'follicular fluid' and 'oocytes'. We included clinical trials, multicentric studies, and reviews. The total number of references found after automatically and manually excluding duplicates was 180. After the primary and secondary screening, 28 articles were selected. Results: The available literature demonstrates the positive effects of ALA in multiple processes, from oocyte maturation (0.87 ± 0.9% of oocyte in MII vs 0.81 ± 3.9%; p < .05) to fertilization, embryo development (57.7% vs 75.7% grade 1 embryo; p < .05) and reproductive outcomes. Its regular administration both in sub-fertile women and men has been shown to reduce pelvic pain in endometriosis (p < .05), regularize menstrual flow and metabolic disorders (p < .01), and improve sperm quality (p < .001). Conclusions: ALA represents a promising new molecule in the field of couple infertility. More clinical studies are needed in order to enhance its use in clinical practice. Keywords: alpha lipoic acid, endometriosis, infertility, male factor, polycystic ovary syndrome

Procedia PDF Downloads 43165 Embedding Resveratrol-Loaded Lipid Nanoparticles and Hydroxyapatite into a Hydrophilic Peg-Based Matrix: Development of Hybrid Nanocomposite Mini-Tablets Suitable for Application in Extraction Sockets to Promote Tissue Healing
Authors: Giulia Di Prima, Cecilia La Mantia, Giada Tranchida, Giuseppe Angellotti, Bartolomeo Megna, Viviana De Caro
Abstract:
Tooth extraction often leads to inflammation, microbial infection, and alveolar bone resorption, thus requiring a comprehensive therapeutic approach. Resveratrol (RSV), a natural polyphenol known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, could safely support tissue regeneration, but its clinical application is limited by its poor water solubility and low bioavailability following oral administration. Multicomponent lipid nanoparticles (mLNPs) can protect RSV, enhance its stability, and improve its interaction with the target tissue. The mLNP-RSV nanosystem, composed of Labrasol® (liquid lipid), glyceryl monostearate (solid lipid), menthol and glycyrrhetinic acid (functional excipients), which displayed synergistic antioxidant effect and wound repair activity. Based on these, the aim of this work was to propose an effective nano-based delivery system able to comprehensively improve the healing process after tooth extraction. To this scope, hydroxyapatite (HXA), a well-known safe and bioabsorbable bone substitute, was combined with mLNP-RSV. The first issue addressed in this work was the choice of an appropriate hydrophilic matrix capable of allowing mLNP-RSV freeze-drying in order to obtain a solid nanocomposite suitable for post-extraction socket insertion. Seven biocompatible polymers were then mixed in several weight ratios with the mLNP-RSV dispersion, subjected to freeze-drying, redispersed and evaluated by DLS analyses. SEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and thermal analysis were used to extensively characterize and select the best nanocomposites. The latter were subjected to in vitro partitioning studies aimed at assessing their ability to release mLNP-RSV from the external hydrophilic matrix to lipophilic tissue. Finally, the optimal nanocomposite, mLNP-RSV-PEG10K, was combined with HXA to create a hybrid nanocomposite powder which was characterized in terms of bulk properties to assess its suitability as a pharmaceutical intermediate to further produce the final mini-tablet dosage form. The latter was obtained by direct compression of the hybrid powder and resulted compliant with the post-extraction socket cavity (≈59 mm³) and thus potentially useful to facilitate localized delivery, promote healing and mitigate alveolar volume reduction. This system could ensure wound asepsis, support bone and soft tissue regeneration, and overcome RSV’s pharmacokinetic limitations. By leveraging the combined properties of HXA and mLNP-RSV, the proposed hybrid nanocomposite mini-tablet represents an innovative therapeutic solution for effective and comprehensive post-extraction healing. Keywords: hydroxyapatite, lipid nanoparticles, nanocomposite, resveratrol, wound healing.
Procedia PDF Downloads 064 Investigating Universals of Rhetoric
Authors: Nasreddin Ahmed
Abstract:
Despite the ostensible extant differences amongst world languages’ structures that have culminated in the divergence in orthographic, phonological, morphological, and syntactic systems that each language has, research in cognitive linguistic strives to establish the claim that such differences are merely prima facie of a totalized universal system of signification.Linguists , since Chomsky, have never given up on the attempt to establish linguistic descriptive model that espouses a perspective in which every human language has a slot . Concurring with claim that the so-called rhetorical devices are pervasive phenomena and not literary-specific , the present paper aspires to voice the claim that rhetorical devices not only ubiquitous in all levels of a particular language but also a universal linguistic phenomena. Using illustrations from Arabic and Englishthe paper intend to provide data-supported evidence that human beings are universally using similar rhetorical, albeit given different appellations. Keywords: language, rhetoric, syntax, stylistics
Procedia PDF Downloads 10163 Resveratrol and Clobetasol-17-Propionate Co-administration to Manage Oral Lichen Planus: Embedding Actives-Loaded Lipid Microspheres Into a Patient-Friendly Buccal Patch
Authors: Giulia Di Prima, Maria Elena Mauceri, Giovanna Giuliana, Viviana De Caro
Abstract:
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, non-infectious inflammatory disease of the oral cavity characterized by symmetrical and bilateral lesions or multiple lesions affecting the buccal mucosa, the tongue, and the gingiva, causing severe pain and impairing patients’ quality of life. Due to its autoimmune nature, the conventional OLP treatment involves the topical administration of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, and clobetasol-17-propionate (CLB) remains the primary therapeutic option, even if there are no commercially available pharmaceutical forms intended for the oral cavity. An aspect of OLP pathogenesis that has been underestimated till now is the role of oxidative stress. During inflammation, the generation of ROS is significantly enhanced. The latter can cause damage to several cellular components such as protein, membrane lipids, nucleic acids, etc, inducing genetic mutations and thus playing a critical role in the potential malignant degeneration. Consequently, a recent systematic review of over 1154 studies has demonstrated that antioxidants might not only effectively reduce pain but also increase the disease resolution rate and prevent potential malignant outcomes. Among natural antioxidants, resveratrol (RSV) is a polyphenol that was recently focused on by researchers due to its biological actions by, which it could be useful in the management of OLP in co-administration with conventional corticosteroids. However, both RSV and CLB suffer from several drawbacks related to their formulation and administration. Based on these considerations, the aim of this work was to develop novel, personalizable, and patient-friendly drug delivery systems for the loco-regional administration of CLB or co-administration of CLB and RSV to treat OLP lesions in order to clinically evaluate both i) the efficacy of stand-alone CLB when administered through a standardizable and innovative formulation instead of the conventionally used ones and ii) the efficacy of the co-administration of the two selected active molecules. To address this issue while also overcoming the limitations of the chosen drugs, a microcomposite patch was designed and characterized. Lipid-based microparticles (LMPs) as solid lipid microparticles (SLM) and microstructured lipid carriers (MLC) were then optimized to encapsulate CLB and RSV, respectively. The LMPs were prepared according to a patented technique [1, 2] and were accurately designed to be applied to the oral cavity. They thus resulted suitable in terms of melting temperature range (compliant with the oral temperature) and particle size (<450 μm). Moreover, in view of their next use for the preparation of the final dosage forms, they were further investigated as a pharmaceutical intermediate in terms of particle shape and flow properties. Subsequently, two different buccal patches were prepared by dispersing the LMPs into a mucoadhesive hydrophilic gel and then subjected to solvent casting: the CLB series patches were loaded only with the SLM-CLB, while the CLB+RSV series patches contained both SLM-CLB and MLC-RSV. Both formulations resulted in soft, deformable, homogeneous, reproducible, mucoadhesive, low swellable, and potentially comfortable for patients. Finally, their ex vivo ability to promote active entry into the buccal tissue was also demonstrated, making them promising drug delivery systems for a further clinical trial actually in progress (Oral Medicine Unit, Palermo University Hospital Policlinico “P. Giaccone”).Keywords: buccal patch, clobetasol-17-propionate, lipid microparticles, oral lichen planus, resveratrol
Procedia PDF Downloads 062 Risks in Forestry Operations, Analysis of Fatal Accidents
Authors: Rino Gubiani, Gianfranco Pergher
Abstract:
The work focused on the statistical analysis of accidents in the forestry sector (2000-2020) in Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, located in the North-East of Italy. The aim of the work was to analyse the evolution of the casualties throughout time and to evaluate possible improvements in the sector. It was shown that even nowadays the rate of accidents in forestry work is higher compared with all the other sectors, including agriculture; moreover, it was highlighted that some accidents remained present throughout the whole analysed range, such as slipping on the soil, being hit by trees and falling down from the plants. The results showed that an increase in forestry exploitation could even increase the total number of accidents, if advanced technological machines, such as cable cranes, would not implemented, given the fact that there is also a significant number of old people (above 50 years old) working in the sector. Keywords: safety, forestry work, accidents, risk analysis, casualties, statistical analysis
Procedia PDF Downloads 13561 Development of a Thermosensitive Buccal Spray Loaded with an Antioxidant Polyphenols-Enriched Secondary Raw Material Produced from Virtuous Recovery of Grape Processing Waste: A Conscious Approach to Daily Oral Care
Authors: Giulia di Prima, Elena Belfiore, Cecilia la Mantia, Serena Indelicato, Giuseppe Avellone, Viviana de Caro
Abstract:
Oxidative stress is the key factor leading to both physiological processes of cosmetic interest (e.g., aging, photoaging) and pathological mechanisms affecting the skin and the mucosae (e.g., oral lichen planus, oral mucositis). These naturally occurring events or altered conditions are both characterized by an imbalance between the oxidative species and the physiological antioxidant defenses. In this view, the daily use of an antioxidant device could be a preventive strategy aimed at restoring any occurring imbalance. Nowadays, the use of natural and safe antioxidants is certainly preferable, and polyphenols are currently under the spotlight. Additionally, as polyphenols suffer from low bioavailability after oral intake, they could surely take advantage of a direct buccal administration. A further actual trend is related to sustainability and circular economy. Particularly, at present, sustainable efforts focus on the extraction of natural antioxidants from agri-food wastes, and recently, the waste black bentonite (BB), an inorganic waste coming from grape/must clarification, emerged as a rich source of polyphenols. Based on these considerations, the aims of this work were to develop and characterize a secondary antioxidant raw material starting from the waste BB and employ this excipient to produce a buccal thermosensitive spray intended for oral cavity wellness. To maintain a sustainable point of view, maceration with eco-friendly and unconventional extraction solvents was established as a method to recover polyphenols. Specifically, according to a waste-to-market approach, PEG200, a well-known safe and eco-friendly pharmaceutic and cosmetic liquid excipient, was selected to obtain a high-value-added secondary raw material directly useful to produce cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. The extract has been extensively characterized by HPLC-DAD and HPLC-MS analyses, DPPH, Bradford, and Folin–Ciocalteu assays as well as validated as a safe raw material of cosmetic interest through OECD-compliant in vitro tests. Then, it was directly inserted into a liquid formulation intended for daily oral care. The goal of the design process was to develop a user-friendly device that could be easily integrated into daily routines. To achieve this, a fluid formulation was designed using Pluronic F-127, a temperature-sensitive gelling polymer, which led to a fluid, sprayable, and easily administrable formulation at room temperature, but that transforms into a viscous gel once at body temperature, enhancing retention time and allowing polyphenols to effectively accumulate in tissues. The formulation incorporated a high concentration of extract (30% w/w), xylitol as a sweetener, preservatives (antimicrobial and antioxidant), and penetration enhancers (urea and sodium dehydrocholate). All components were dissolved in a citrate buffer (pH 5.5) to preserve and stabilize the polyphenols. The temperature-dependent gelation behavior has then been assessed by both in vitro and ex vivo tests and also the antioxidant power of the formulation was evaluated. Finally, the formulation has been proved through ex vivo test to be able to allow rapid polyphenol tissue accumulation as both the buccal and sublingual tissues were saturated after just 15 min of application. Keywords: antioxidant, in situ gelling, oromucosal spray, polyphenols, waste recovery

Procedia PDF Downloads 58459 Influence of Orientation in Complex Building Architecture in Various Climatic Regions in Winter
Authors: M. Alwetaishi, Giulia Sonetti
Abstract:
It is architecturally accepted that building form and design is considered as one of the most important aspects in affecting indoor temperature. The total area of building plan might be identical, but the design will have a major influence on the total area of external walls. This will have a clear impact on the amount of heat exchange with outdoor. Moreover, it will affect the position and area of glazing system. This has not received enough consideration in research by the specialists, since most of the publications are highlighting the impact of building envelope in terms of physical heat transfer in buildings. This research will investigate the impact of orientation of various building forms in various climatic regions. It will be concluded that orientation and glazing to wall ratio were recognized to be the most effective variables despite the shape of the building. However, linear ad radial forms were found more appropriate shapes almost across the continent. Keywords: architectural building design, building form, building design in different climate, indoor air temperature

Procedia PDF Downloads 17357 Discovering the Real Psyche of Human Beings
Authors: Sheetla Prasad
Abstract:
The objective of this study is ‘discovering the real psyche of human beings for prediction of mode, direction and strength of the potential of actions of the individual. The human face was taken as a source of central point to search for the route of real psyche. Analysis of the face architecture (shape and salient features of face) was done by three directional photographs ( 600 left and right and camera facing) of human beings. The shapes and features of the human face were scaled in 177 units on the basis of face–features locations (FFL). The mathematical analysis was done of FFLs by self developed and standardized formula. At this phase, 800 samples were taken from the population of students, teachers, advocates, administrative officers, and common persons. The finding shows that real psyche has two external rings (ER). These ER are itself generator of two independent psyches (manifested and manipulated). Prima-facie, it was proved that micro differences in FFLs have potential to predict the state of art of the human psyche. The potential of psyches was determined by the saving and distribution of mental energy. It was also mathematically proved. Keywords: face architecture, psyche, potential, face functional ratio, external rings
Procedia PDF Downloads 51456 Alignment in Earnings Management Research: Italy Looking towards US
Authors: Giulia Leoni, Cristina Florio
Abstract:
The paper aims to investigate the factors driving the increasing alignment of Italian earnings management (EM) research to US research on the same field. After characterizing the progressive similarity of Italian EM research with respect to US one by means of an historical comparison, the paper relies on a subsequent secondary source analysis to detect the possible causes of said alignment. Once identified that the alignment increased along three subsequent periods, the paper analyses and discusses this incremental similarity according to new institutional sociology (NIS) and highlights the presence of different combination of isomorphic pressures that help explaining this incremental similarity. The paper contributes to the institutional literature by providing evidence of isomorphism in academic research; it also contributes to accounting research by indicating the forces that are able to drive change and development in accounting research at national and international level. The paper also enlarges the explanatory value of NIS in alternative contexts, like academic accounting research. Keywords: accounting research, earnings management, international comparison, Italy, new institutional sociology, US
Procedia PDF Downloads 57755 Simultaneous Esterification and Transesterification of High FFA Jatropha Oil Using Reactive Distillation for Biodiesel Production
Authors: Ratna Dewi Kusumaningtyas, Prima Astuti Handayani, Arief Budiman
Abstract:
Reactive Distillation (RD) is a multifunctional reactor which integrates chemical reaction with in situ separation to shift the equilibrium towards the product formation. Thus, it is suitable for equilibrium limited reaction such as esterification and transesterification to enhance the reaction conversion. In this work, the application of RD for high FFA oil esterification-transterification for biodiesel production using sulphuric acid catalyst has been studied. Crude Jatropha Oil with FFA content of 30.57% was utilized as the feedstock. Effects of the catalyst concentration and molar ratio of the alcohol to oils were also investigated. It was revealed that best result was obtained with sulphuric acid catalyst (reaction conversion of 94.71% and FFA content of 1.62%) at 60C, molar ratio of methanol to FFA of 30:1, and catalyst loading of 3%. After undergoing esterification reaction, jatropha oil was then transesterified to produce biodiesel. Transesterification reaction was performed in the presence of NaOH catalyst in RD column at 60C, molar ratio of methanol to oil of 6:1, and catalyst concentration of 1%. It demonstrated that biodiesel produced in this work agreed with the Indonesian National and ASTM standard of fuel. Keywords: reactive distillation, biodiesel, esterification, transesterification
Procedia PDF Downloads 46554 An Investigation of Anticancer Fluorinated Aza-Heterocycles
Authors: Darya O. Prima, Elena V. Vorontsova, Yuri G. Slizhov, Andrey V. Zibarev
Abstract:
A broad family of carbocycle-fluorinated aza-heterocycles including 1,3-benzodiazoles (benzimidazoles), 1,2,3-benzotriazoles, 2,1,3-benzothia/selenadiazoles and 1,4-benzodiazines (quinoxalines) was synthesized in the unified way and assessed for cytotoxicity towards the Hep2 (laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma, a kind of oral cancer) cells. The diazoles, triazoles and selenadiazoles revealed low medium inhibitory concentrations IC50 = 2.2-26.4 µМ and induced the cells’ apoptosis at low concentrations C = 1-25 µМ. For selenadiazoles, cell death dynamics was observed already in the first hours after the treatment. Replacement of one atom F by group Me2N in some cases enlarged apoptotic activity of the compounds towards the Hep2 cells. In contrast, the archetypal (i.e. non-fluorinated) 1,3-benzodiazole, 1,2,3-benzotriazole and 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole were low toxic (IC50 > 100 µM) and induced apoptosis only at high concentrations. The chlorinated congeners of the heterocycles under discussion were highly toxic towards the Hep2 cells but revealed insignificant ability to induce their apoptosis. Overall, the findings above suggest that fluorinated 1,3-benzodiazole, 1,2,3-benzotriazole and 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole derivatives can be considered as potential anticancer drugs. For the laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma (for which, according to available statistics, the five-year survival rate remained ~50% during the past 30 years), it is especially important since surgical treatment is seriously complicated here thus encouraging medicament one. Keywords: Apoptosis, aza-heterocycles, cytotoxicity, fluorinated, Hep2 cells, synthesis
Procedia PDF Downloads 34153 Factors Affecting Cost Efficiency of Municipal Waste Services in Tuscan Municipalities: An Empirical Investigation by Accounting for Different Management
Authors: María Molinos-Senante, Giulia Romano
Abstract:
This paper aims at investigating the effect of ownership in the efficiency assessment of municipal solid waste management. In doing so, the Data Envelopment Analysis meta-frontier approach integrating unsorted waste as undesirable output was applied. Three different clusters of municipalities have been created on the basis of the ownership type of municipal waste operators. In the second stage of analysis, the paper investigates factors affecting efficiency, in order to provide an outlook of levers to be used by policy and decision makers to improve efficiency, taking into account different management models in force. Results show that public waste management firms have better performance than mixed and private ones since their efficiency scores are significantly larger. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the efficiency of waste management firms is statistically influenced by the age of population, population served, municipal size, population density and tourism rate. It evidences the importance of economies of scale on the cost efficiency of waste management. This issue is relevant for policymakers to define and implement policies aimed to improve the long-term sustainability of waste management in municipalities. Keywords: data envelopment analysis, efficiency, municipal solid waste, ownership, undesirable output

Authors: Dewi Selvia Fardhyanti, Astrilia Damayanti
Abstract:
Coal tar is a liquid by-product of coal pyrolysis processes. This liquid oil mixture contains various kind of useful compounds such as benzoic aromatic compounds and phenolic compounds. These compounds are widely used as raw material for insecticides, dyes, medicines, perfumes, coloring matters, and many others. The coal tar was collected by pyrolysis process of coal obtained from PT Kaltim Prima Coal and Arutmin-Kalimantan. The experiments typically occurred at the atmospheric pressure in a laboratory furnace at temperatures ranging from 300 to 550oC with a heating rate of 10oC/min and a holding time of 1 hour at the pyrolysis temperature. Nitrogen gas has been used to obtain the inert condition and to carry the gaseous pyrolysis products. The pyrolysis transformed organic materials into gaseous components, small quantities of liquid, and a solid residue (coke) containing fixed amount of carbon and ash. The composition of gas which is produced from the pyrolysis is carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and other hydrocarbon compounds. The gas was condensed and the liquid containing oil/tar and water was obtained. The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) was used to analyze the coal tar components. The obtained coal tar has the viscosity of 3.12 cp, the density of 2.78 g/cm3, the calorific value of 11,048.44 cal/g, and the molecular weight of 222.67. The analysis result showed that the coal tar contained more than 78 chemical compounds such as benzene, cresol, phenol, xylene, naphtalene, etc. The total phenolic compounds contained in coal tar is 33.25% (PT KPC) and 17.58% (Arutmin-Kalimantan). The total naphtalene compounds contained in coal tar is 14.15% (PT KPC) and 17.13% (Arutmin-Kalimantan).Keywords: coal tar, pyrolysis, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy

Abstract:
The Bogowonto River or commonly called the Bhagawanta River, is one of the rivers on Java Island. It is located in Central Java, Indonesia. Its watershed area is 35 km² with 57 km long. This river covers three regencies, namely Wonosobo Regency and Magelang Regency in the upstream and Purworejo Regency in the south and downstream. The Bogowonto River experiences channel narrowing and silting. It is caused by garbage along the river that comes from livestock and household waste. The narrowing channel and siltation cause a capacity reduction of the river to drain flood discharge. Comprehensive and sustainable actions are needed in dealing with current and future floods. Based on these current conditions, a priority scale is required. Therefore, this study aims to determine the priority scale of flood management in Purworejo Regency using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. This method will determine the appropriate actions based on the rating. In addition, there will be field observations through distributing questionnaires to several parties, including the stakeholders and the community. The results of this study will be in 2 (two) forms of actions, both structurally covering water structures and non-structural, including social, environmental, and law enforcement. Keywords: analytical hierarchy process, bogowonto, flood control, management

Abstract:
Cladode chemical composition may vary according to soil factors, cultivation season, and plant age. The primary metabolites of cladodes are water, carbohydrates, and proteins. The carbohydrates in cladodes are divided into two types: structural and storage. Polysaccharides from Opuntia ficus‐indica (L.) Mill plants build molecular networks with the capacity to retain water; thus, they act as mucoprotective agents. Mucilage is the main polysaccharide of cladodes; it contains polymers of β‐d‐galacturonic acid bound in positions (1–4) and traces of R‐linked l‐rhamnose (1-2). Mucilage regulates both the cell water content during prolonged drought and the calcium flux in the plant cells. The in vitro analysis of keratinocytes in monolayer, through the scratch-wound-healing assay, provided promising results. After 48 hours of exposure, the wound scratch was almost completely closed in cells treated with cladode extract. After 72 hours, the treated cells reached complete confluence, while in the untreated cells (negative control) the confluence was reached after 96 hours. We also added a positive control group of cells treated with colchicine, which inhibited wound closure for a more comprehensive analysis. Keywords: cladodes, metabolites, polysaccharide, scratch-wound-healing assay
Procedia PDF Downloads 6047 Characterisation of Fractions Extracted from Sorghum Byproducts

Abstract:
Sorghum byproducts, namely bran, stalk, and panicle are examples of lignocellulosic biomass. These raw materials contain large amounts of polysaccharides, in particular hemicelluloses, celluloses, and lignins, which if efficiently extracted, can be utilised for the development of a range of added value products with potential applications in agriculture and food packaging sectors. The aim of this study was to characterise fractions extracted from sorghum bran and stalk with regards to their physicochemical properties that could determine their applicability as food-packaging materials. A sequential alkaline extraction was applied for the isolation of cellulosic, hemicellulosic and lignin fractions from sorghum stalk and bran. Lignin content, phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were also investigated in the case of the lignin fraction. Thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) revealed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of cellulose fraction of the stalk was ~78.33 oC at amorphous state (~65%) and water content of ~5%. In terms of hemicellulose, the Tg value of stalk was slightly lower compared to bran at amorphous state (~54%) and had less water content (~2%). It is evident that hemicelluloses generally showed a lower thermal stability compared to cellulose, probably due to their lack of crystallinity. Additionally, bran had higher arabinose-to-xylose ratio (0.82) than the stalk, a fact that indicated its low crystallinity. Furthermore, lignin fraction had Tg value of ~93 oC at amorphous state (~11%). Stalk-derived lignin fraction contained more phenolic compounds (mainly consisting of p-coumaric and ferulic acid) and had higher lignin content and antioxidant capacity compared to bran-derived lignin fraction. Keywords: alkaline extraction, bran, cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, stalk

Abstract:
Communication between practitioner and patient is of the utmost importance in aesthetic medicine: as of today, images of previous treatments are the most common tool used by doctors to describe and anticipate future results for their patients. However, using photos of other people often reduces the engagement of the prospective patient and is further limited by the number and quality of pictures available to the practitioner. Pre-existing work solves this issue in two ways: 3D scanning of the area with manual editing of the 3D model by the doctor or automatic prediction of the treatment by warping the image with hand-written parameters. The first approach requires the manual intervention of the doctor, while the second approach always generates results that aren’t always realistic. Thus, in one case, there is significant manual work required by the doctor, and in the other case, the prediction looks artificial. We propose an AI-based algorithm that autonomously generates a realistic prediction of treatment results. For the purpose of this study, we focus on hyaluronic acid treatments in the facial area. Our approach takes into account the individual characteristics of each face, and furthermore, the prediction system allows the patient to decide which area of the face she wants to modify. We show that the predictions generated by our system are realistic: first, the quality of the generated images is on par with real images; second, the prediction matches the actual results obtained after the treatment is completed. In conclusion, the proposed approach provides a valid tool for doctors to show patients what they will look like before deciding on the treatment. Keywords: prediction, hyaluronic acid, treatment, artificial intelligence
Procedia PDF Downloads 12043 The Precarious Chinese Ecology of Financial Expertise: Discontent in the Mix
Authors: Giulia Dal Maso
Abstract:
Within the contemporary financial capitalist configuration, the interplay of Chinese statecraft and financialization has shaped a new ‘ecology of financial expertise.’ This indicates the emergence of a new financial technocratic governance; that is increasingly changing the Chinese economy, reducing the state’s administrative and fiscal functions and increasing state assets in accordance with a new shareholder logic. In this shift, the creation of the stock market by the state was conceived not only as a new redistributor of wealth but as a ‘clearing house’ for social discontent resulting from work casualization, wage repression and a lack of social welfare. Since its inception in the wake of Deng Xiaoping’s reforms, the Chinese state has used the stock market as a means of securing social legitimation by providing a prearranged space where the disaggregated and vulnerable subjects left behind by the dismantlement of the collective work units of the Maoist period (danwei) can congregate. However, fieldwork which included both participant observation as well as interviews with investors in brokerage rooms in Shanghai (where one of only two mainland Chinese stock exchanges is situated) reveals that both new formal and informal financial experts—namely the haigui (Chinese returnees with a financial degree abroad) and sanhu (individual Chinese scattered players), are equally dissatisfied with their investing activities. They express discontent with the state, which they hold responsible for the summer 2015 financial crisis and for the financial turmoil that jeopardizes China’s financial and political project. What the investors want is a state that will guarantee the continuation of the current gupiaore ‘stock fever’. This paper holds that, by embracing financialization, the state is undermining the contract at the base of its legitimacy. Keywords: Chinese state, Deng Xiaoping, financial capitalism, individual investors

Authors: Coppa Federica, Iannello Giulia, Pennisi Stefania, Giuffrida Graziella, Lo Faro Riccardo, Cartelli Simone, Ferruggia Greta, Brundo Maria Violetta
Abstract:
In recent years, a new field of basic research has emerged: the biology and physiology of extracellular vesicles and their application in diagnostics and therapy. In particular, exosomes attract the scientific community as nanovesicles of endosomal origin, which can be secreted by a variety of cells and are found in all biological fluids. Exosomes have recently gained attention also in the cosmetic field: in fact, they are used in creams, serums and masks for topical use, proving to have a series of therapeutic and anti-aging benefits. To date, the oral administration of exosomes is the subject of attention because it represents a non-invasive and efficient method for delivering bioactive molecules into the intestine. We decided to focus our research on the creation of a food supplement that contains various bioactive factors, vitamins, and a new technology called AMPLEX PLUS, containing a mixture of 20 different biologically active factors (GF20) and exosomes isolated and purified from bovine colostrum. We have demonstrated in vitro that this new supplement acts on telomerase, slowing down cell aging. Amplex plus increased the proliferation rate of cells and the addition of it reduced the rate of telomere shortening. Under oxidative stress conditions (H2O2 – induced), the TSR increased; however, treatment with colostrum appeared to attenuate this increase. In particular, after 2 weeks of treatment, AMPLEX plus increased the proliferation rate of cells and exerted a protective effect on telomere length erosion, reducing the rate of its shortening. Keywords: AMPLEX PLUS, colostrum, exosomes, telomerase
