5813 Attitudes Towards Different Types of Rape
Authors: Avigail Moor
Abstract:
Rape by an acquaintance is a prevalent type of sexual assault that is often misperceived and downplayed. To date, there has been no empirical investigation of the prevailing social attitudes towards this type of rape as compared to stranger rape. The present study seeks to address this issue by evaluating widely held attitudes towards these different types of rape. The mediating role of gender and rape myths acceptance is assessed as well. Three hundred and twenty participants, equally divided by gender, completed self-report questionnaires. The results indicate that sexual coercion by strangers is perceived as rape to a significantly greater degree than forced sex by an acquaintance, which in turn is believed to be more harmful than coercion within a steady relationship, particularly by men who view rape in accordance with prevailing rape-supportive attitudes. The same pattern of differentiation emerged in the participants' attitudes toward the psychological harm expected following each, as well as the advisability of reporting the incidents to the police. Implications for preventive efforts are discussed. Keywords: rape supportive attitudes, acquaintance rape, sexual assault, gender differences
Procedia PDF Downloads 1655812 Exploring Exterior and Oral Tradition of Kyoto as the Act of Cultural Design
Authors: Takuya Inoue
Abstract:
Applying affordance theory to the field of communication research has been more significant. This paper suggests that the act of design, including language, is defined as encouraging or restricting affordance of an object or event and make it perceivable for users, rather merely conveying information. From this point of view, 5 types of oral expressions in Kyoto dialect, as well as 4 types of exterior design such as sekimori-ishi (a barrier-stone in a teahouse garden) which are specific to traditions in Kyoto, are examined. We found that exterior designs have no physical power in itself, they work as ‘signifier’ to highlight cultural frames which heavily depend on exclusive culture among city-dwellers in Kyoto. At the same time, the expressions are implicit, even sometimes sarcastic, which are also supported by cultural frames. In conclusion, the existence of traditional design is motivated in informative ‘ecological frame.’Keywords: affordance theory, communication, cultural design, Japanese culture, Kyoto dialect, signifier

Authors: Nafiseh Ebrahimi, Gautham Muthukumaran, Amir Jafari
Abstract:
Human walking gait is considered to be the most efficient biped walking gait. There are various types of gait human follows during locomotion and arm swing is one of the most important factors which controls and differentiates human gaits. Earlier studies declared a 7% reduction in the metabolic cost due to the arm swing. In this research, we compared different types of arm swings in terms of metabolic cost reduction and then suggested, designed, fabricated and tested a quasi-passive upper body exoskeleton to study the metabolic cost reduction in the folded arm walking gate scenarios. Our experimental results validate a 10% reduction in the metabolic cost of walking aided by the application of the proposed exoskeleton. Keywords: arm swing, MET (metabolic equivalent of a task), calorimeter, oxygen consumption, upper body quasi-passive exoskeleton
Procedia PDF Downloads 1615810 A Quantitative Investigation of the Relation between Gender and Different Types of Loneliness among Adults in Flanders, Belgium
Authors: J. De Witte, W. Schepers, L. Heylen, T. Van Regenmortel
Abstract:
Loneliness is increasingly considered a major public health threat. Feelings of severe loneliness negatively affect the social network, physical and mental health, mortality, and quality of life. Although loneliness is generally associated with old age, loneliness is of all ages, and young adults often have the highest risk of loneliness. Further, it is crucial to take the specific types of loneliness into account when studying and developing loneliness interventions. At the moment, little is known about how age interacts with this specific relation while taking into account various dimensions of loneliness (social, emotional and existential) among adults of all ages. Nevertheless, it is crucial to take the life course perspective into account when studying the relationship between loneliness and gender because several characteristics of the life course depend on gender. Therefore, this study investigates the relation between gender and different types of loneliness (social, emotional and existential) among adults of all ages in Flanders, Belgium, while taking into account its interaction with age. In this respect, we make use of a representative large-scale survey conducted in the period of May-July 2024 among adults (18+) living in the Flemish Region, Belgium, which could be completed both online (via QR code or website) and in writing. We wrote to 15,000 residents of the Flemish Region, who - after approval by the National Register - were randomly selected by Statbel. Next, ‘MAS Research’ wrote to those individuals via a written invitation letter and again via two reminders to complete this survey. After data cleansing, we retained 3756 questionnaires, which were at least 90% completed, or a response rate of 25.1%. A total of 2700 questionnaires were completed online (71.9%) and 1056 in writing (28.1%). The analyses use a weighting factor, which was calculated to account for over- and under-representation of certain groups with regard to age and gender. Preliminary results show that the relationship between gender and loneliness depends on the specific type of loneliness. For the youngest age group (18-25 years), we find, for example, no difference between men and women with respect to social loneliness, but women are significantly more emotionally lonely at that age period than men. Further, we find that there is no association between gender and loneliness for all age groups, except for young adults (25-34 years), where men are significantly more lonely than women, which is entirely explained by men being significantly more socially lonely than women. Knowledge about the specific relationship between gender and the different types of loneliness, which is dependent on age, is crucial when setting up interventions that aim to prevent or alleviate loneliness. Policymakers should always take into account the different types of loneliness when setting up loneliness interventions for a specific target group, and hereby take into account differences in life stages for young men and women. Keywords: adults, emotional loneliness, gender, loneliness, social loneliness

Authors: Jain Jyoti, Jain Shorab, Sinha Shishir
Abstract:
In the field of material engineering, composites are in great concern for their nonbiodegradability and their cost. In order to reduce its cost and weight, plant derived fibers witnessed miraculous triumph. Plant fibers can be of different types like seed fibers, blast fibers, leaf fibers, etc. Composites can be reinforced with exclusively one type of natural fiber or also can be combined with two or more different types of natural or synthetic fibers to boost up their specific properties. Among all natural fibers, wheat straw, bagasse, kenaf, pineapple leaf, banana, coir, ramie, flax, etc. pineapple leaf fibers have very good mechanical properties. Being hydrophilic in nature, pineapple leaf fibers have very less affinity towards all types of polymer matrixes like HDPE, LDPE, PET, epoxy, etc. Surface treatments like alkaline treatment in different concentrations were conducted to improve its adhesion and compatibility towards hydrophobic polymer matrix i.e. epoxy resin. Pineapple leaf fiber epoxy composites have been prepared using hand layup method. Effect of fiber loading and surface treatments have been studied for different mechanical properties i.e. tensile strength, flexural strength and impact properties of pineapple leaf fiber composites. Analysis of fiber morphology has also been studied using FTIR, XRD. Scanning electron microscopy has also been used to study and compare the morphology of untreated and treated fibers. Also, the fracture surface has been reviewed comparing the reported literature of other eminent researchers of this field. Keywords: composite, mechanical, natural fiber, pineapple leaf fiber

Authors: A. Pattulee, I. Lawan, N. Boonnao, R. Gholami, P. Rimdusit, S. Rimdusit
Abstract:
Varied types and content of ultrafine vulcanized powdered natural rubbers (UFPNR) as toughening fillers of polybenzoxazine composite are investigated in this work. Four types of UFPNR were prepared by graft polymerization of acrylonitrile monomer (AN), styrene monomer (ST), styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (ST/AN), and styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer (ST/MMA) onto deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR). The solid UFPNR powders with different types of grafting were finally obtained by electron beam vulcanization and a spray-drying technique. Additionally, effects of various UFPNR contents (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt%) on toughness of polybenzoxazine composites were studied. It was observed that the UFPNR grafted with the styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer (UFPNR-g-(PS-co-PMMA)) exhibited the most effective toughening agent for polybenzoxazine, whereas the rubber powder content of 25 wt% was found to be the optimal filler loading in enhancing the toughness of the resulting composite. The experimental results revealed an increase of 86% in toughness and 56% in impact strength at the above UFPNR-g- (PS-co-PMMA powdered rubber content. Interestingly, the utilization of the UFPNR-g-(PS-co-PMMA as toughening agent was found to increase thermal stability (degradation temperature at 5wt.% (Td5) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composite i.e. an increase of 8°C and 6 °C has been observed for the Td5 and Tg, respectively. Keywords: natural rubber, ultrafine fully vulcanized powder rubber, polybenzoxazine, polymer composite, toughening

Authors: James Kinyua Gitonga, Toshio Fujimi
Abstract:
Vulnerability assessment and analysis is essential to solving the degree of damage and loss as a result of natural disasters. Urban flooding causes a major economic loss and casualties, at Mathare residential area in Nairobi, Kenya. High population caused by rural-urban migration, Unemployment, and unplanned urban development are among factors that increase flood vulnerability in Mathare area. This study aims to analyse flood risk physical vulnerabilities in Mathare based on scientific data, research data that includes the Rainfall data, River Mathare discharge rate data, Water runoff data, field survey data and questionnaire survey through sampling of the study area have been used to develop the risk curves. Three structural types of building were identified in the study area, vulnerability and risk curves were made for these three structural types by plotting the relationship between flood depth and damage for each structural type. The results indicate that the structural type with mud wall and mud floor is the most vulnerable building to flooding while the structural type with stone walls and concrete floor is least vulnerable. The vulnerability of building contents is mainly determined by the number of floors, where households with two floors are least vulnerable, and households with a one floor are most vulnerable. Therefore more than 80% of the residential buildings including the property in the building are highly vulnerable to floods consequently exposed to high risk. When estimating the potential casualties/injuries we discovered that the structural types of houses were major determinants where the mud/adobe structural type had casualties of 83.7% while the Masonry structural type had casualties of 10.71% of the people living in these houses. This research concludes that flood awareness, warnings and observing the building codes will enable reduce damage to the structural types of building, deaths and reduce damage to the building contents. Keywords: flood loss, Mathare Nairobi, risk curve analysis, vulnerability

Authors: Saba Atefyekta
Abstract:
Aim: Control of bacterial bioburden in wounds is an important step for minimizing the risk of wound infection. An antimicrobial hydrogel wound dressing is developed out of soft polymeric hydrogels that contain antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Such wound dressings can bind and kill all types of bacteria, even the resistance types at the wound site. Methods: AMPs are permanently bonded onto a soft nanostructured polymer via covalent attachment and physical entanglement. This improves stability, rapid antibacterial activity, and, most importantly, prevents the leaching of AMPs. Major Findings: Antimicrobial analysis of antimicrobial hydrogels using in-vitro wound models confirmed >99% killing efficiency against multiple bacterial trains, including MRSA, MDR, E. Coli. Furthermore, the hydrogel retained its antibacterial activity for up to 4 days when exposed to human serum. Tests confirmed no release of AMPs, and it was proven non-toxic to mammalian cells. An in-vivo study on human intact skin showed a significant reduction of bacteria for part of the subject’s skin treated with antibacterial hydrogels. A similar result was detected through a qualitative study in veterinary trials on different types of surgery wounds in cats, dogs, and horses. Conclusions: Antimicrobial hydrogels wound dressings developed by permanent attachment of AMPs can effectively and rapidly kill bacteria in contact. Such antibacterial hydrogel wound dressings are non-toxic and do not release any substances into the wound. Keywords: antibacterial wound dressing, antimicrobial peptides, post-surgical wounds, infection

Authors: Rolla Monib, Chris Ian Goodier, Alistair Gibb
Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate decision support strategies in the EC sector to determine the most appropriate degree of modularization. This is achieved through three oil and gas (O&G) and two power plant case studies via semi-structured interviews (n=59 and n=27, respectively), analysis of project documents, and case study-specific semi-structured validation interviews (n=12 and n=8). New terminology to distinguish degrees of modularization is proposed, along with a decision-making support checklist and a diagrammatic decision-making support figure. Results indicate that the EC sub-sectors were substantially more satisfied with the application of component, structural, or traditional modularization compared with system modularization for some types of modules. Key drivers for decisions on the degree of modularization vary across module types. This paper can help the EC sector determine the most suitable degree of modularization via a decision-making support strategy. Keywords: modularization, engineering construction, case study, decision support

Authors: Reza Dehghani Bidgoli
Abstract:
Information on different rangeland plants’ nutritive values at various phonological stages is important in rangelands management. This information helps rangeland managers to choose proper grazing times to achieve higher animal performance without detrimental effects on the rangeland vegetations. Effects of various plant parts’ phonological stages and vegetation types on reserve carbohydrates and forage quality indicators were investigated during the 2009 and 2010. Plant samples were collected in a completely randomized block (CRB) design. The species included, grasses (Secale montanum and Festuco ovina), forbs (Lotus corniculatus and Sanguisorba minor), and shrubs (Kochia prosterata and Salsola rigida). Aerial plant parts’ samples were oven-dried at 80oC for 24 hours, then analyzed for soluble carbohydrates, crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), dry matter digestible (DMD), and metabolizable energy (ME). Results showed that plants at the seedling stage had more reserve carbohydrates and from the three vegetation types (grass, forbs, and shrub), forbs contained more soluble carbohydrates compared to the other two (grasses and shrubs). Differences in soluble carbohydrate contents of different species at various phonological stages in 2 years were statistically significant. The forage quality indicators (CP, ADF, DMD, and ME) in different species, in different vegetation types, in the 2 years were statistically significant, except for the CP.Keywords: grazing, soluble carbohydrate, protein, fiber, metabolizeable energy

Authors: Ashraf M. Ward, Ruban S. Yu
Abstract:
Data consisting of 2757 records from tow Holstein herds made between 2000 and 2010 were used to examine environmental factors affecting age at first calving (AFC) and calving intervals (CI) and consequently estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters and trends. The overall means and standard errors for AFC and CI were 39.4 ± 7.2 months and 487.5 ± 151.6 days respectively. The respective heritability estimates were 0.091 ± 0.05 and 0.044 ± 0.032, while the repeatability estimate for CI was 0.096 ± 0.001. The genetic trends for CI and AFC were -0.6 d/yr and -0.01 mo/yr respectively and were both significant (P < 0.001), indicating a decrease in mean breeding value over the study period. Phenotypic trends were -0.31 mo/yr and -0.35 d/yr for AFC and CI respectively though non-significant (P > 0.05). The low heritability for CI and AFC indicated that temporary environmental influences were much greater than genetic influences or permanent environmental influences on these traits. Keywords: Holstein, reproductive, genetic parameters, heritability

Authors: Hesham A. El Zouka, Mustafa M. Hosni ka
Abstract:
The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has a diverse base of applications, but it is also prone to security threats. There are different types of security attacks that limit the range of the RFID applications. For example, deploying the RFID networks in insecure environments could make the RFID system vulnerable to many types of attacks such as spoofing attack, location traceability attack, physical attack and many more. Therefore, security is often an important requirement for RFID systems. In this paper, RFID mutual authentication protocol is implemented based on mobile agent technology and timestamp, which are used to provide strong authentication and integrity assurances to both the RFID readers and their corresponding RFID tags. The integration of mobile agent technology and timestamp provides promising results towards achieving this goal and towards reducing the security threats in RFID systems. Keywords: RFID, security, authentication protocols, privacy, agent-based architecture, time-stamp, digital signature
Procedia PDF Downloads 2705796 The Friction of Oil Contaminated Granular Soils; Experimental Study
Authors: Miron A., Tadmor R., Pinkert S.
Abstract:
Soil contamination is a pressing environmental concern, drawing considerable focus due to its adverse ecological and health outcomes, and the frequent occurrence of contamination incidents in recent years. The interaction between the oil pollutant and the host soil can alter the mechanical properties of the soil in a manner that can crucially affect engineering challenges associated with the stability of soil systems. The geotechnical investigation of contaminated soils has gained momentum since the Gulf War in the 1990s, when a massive amount of oil was spilled into the ocean. Over recent years, various types of soil contaminations have been studied to understand the impact of pollution type, uncovering the mechanical complexity that arises not just from the pollutant type but also from the properties of the host soil and the interplay between them. This complexity is associated with diametrically opposite effects in different soil types. For instance, while certain oils may enhance the frictional properties of cohesive soils, they can reduce the friction in granular soils. This striking difference can be attributed to the different mechanisms at play: physico-chemical interactions predominate in the former case, whereas lubrication effects are more significant in the latter. this study introduces an empirical law designed to quantify the mechanical effect of oil contamination in granular soils, factoring the properties of both the contaminating oil and the host soil. This law is achieved by comprehensive experimental research that spans a wide array of oil types and soils with unique configurations and morphologies. By integrating these diverse data points, our law facilitates accurate predictions of how oil contamination modifies the frictional characteristics of general granular soils. Keywords: contaminated soils, lubrication, friction, granular media

Authors: V. V. Singh
Abstract:
We have studied the reliability measures of a system, which consists of two subsystems i.e. subsystem-1 and subsystem-2 in series configuration under different types of failure. The subsystem-1 has three identical units in parallel configuration and operating under 2-out-of-3: G policy and connected to subsystem-2 in series configuration. Each subsystem has different types of failure and repair rates. An important cause for failure of system is unsuitability of the environmental conditions, like overheating, weather conditions, heavy rainfall, storm etc. The environmental failure is taken into account in the proposed repairable system. Supplementary variable technique is used to study of system and some traditional measures such as; availability, reliability, MTTF and profit function are obtained for different values of parameters. In the proposed model, some particular cases of failure rates are explicitly studied. Keywords: environmental failure, human failure, availability, MTTF, reliability, profit analysis, Gumbel-Hougaard family copula

Procedia PDF Downloads 4755789 On the Efficiency of a Double-Cone Gravitational Motor and Generator
Authors: Barenten Suciu, Akio Miyamura
Abstract:
In this paper, following the study-case of an inclined plane gravitational machine, efficiency of a double-cone gravitational motor and generator is evaluated. Two types of efficiency ratios, called translational efficiency and rotational efficiency, are defined relative to the intended duty of the gravitational machine, which can be either the production of translational kinetic energy, or rotational kinetic energy. One proved that, for pure rolling movement of the double- cone, in the absence of rolling friction, the total mechanical energy is conserved. In such circumstances, as the motion of the double-cone progresses along rails, the translational efficiency decreases and the rotational efficiency increases, in such way that sum of the rotational and translational efficiencies remains unchanged and equal to 1. Results obtained allow a comparison of the gravitational machine with other types of motor-generators, in terms of the achievable efficiency. Keywords: efficiency, friction, gravitational motor and generator, rolling and sliding, truncated double-cone

Authors: Saveena Bogtapa, Jagbir Singh Kirti
Abstract:
Himalaya is one of the most fascinating ranges in the world. In India, it comprises 18 percent of the land area. Lahoul valley which is a part of Trans-Himalaya region is well known for its unique, diverse flora and fauna. It lies in the North-Eastern corner of the state Himachal Pradesh where its altitude ranges between 2500m to 5000m. Vegetation of this region is dry-temperate to alpine type. The diversity of the area is very less, rare, unique and highly endemic. But today, as a lot of environmental degradation has taken place in this hot spot of biodiversity because of frequent developmental and commercial activities which lead to the diversity of this area comes under a real threat. Therefore, as part of the research, butterflies which are known for their attractiveness as well as usefulness to the ecosystem, are used for the study. The diversity of butterflies of a particular area not only provides a healthy environment but also serves as the first step of conservation to the biodiversity. Their distribution in different habitats and altitude type helps us to understand the species richness and abundance in an area. Moreover, different environmental parameters which affect the butterfly community has also recorded. Hence, the present study documents the butterfly diversity in an unexplored habitat and altitude types at Lahoul valley. The valley has been surveyed along with altitudinal gradients (from 2500m to 4500m) and in various habitats like agriculture land, grassland, scrubland, riverine and in different types of forests. Very rare species of butterflies have been explored, and these will be discussed along with different parameters during the presentation. Keywords: butterflies, diversity, Lahoul valley, altitude, vegetation

Abstract:
Time and cost is an integral part of every construction plan and can affect each party’s contractual obligations. The performance of both time and cost are usually important to the client and contractor during the project. Almost all construction projects are experiencing time overrun. These time overruns always contributed as expensive to both client and contractor. Construction of any project inside the gathering centers involves complex management skills related to work force, materials, plant, machineries, new technologies etc. It also involves many agencies interdependent on each other like the vendors, structural and functional designers including various types of specialized engineers and it includes support of contractors and specialized contractors. This paper mainly highlights the types of construction delays due to which project suffer time and cost overrun. This paper also speaks about the delay causes and factors that contribute to the construction sequence delay for the oil and gas projects. Construction delay is supposed to be one of the repeated problems in the construction projects and it has an opposing effect on project success in terms of time, cost and quality. Some effective methods are identified to minimize delays in construction projects such as: 1. Site management and supervision, 2. Effective strategic planning, 3. Clear information and communication channel. Our research paper studies the types of delay with some real examples with statistic results and suggests solutions to overcome this problem. Keywords: non-compensable delay, delays caused by force majeure, compensable delay, delays caused by the owner or the owner’s representative, non-excusable delay, delay caused by the contractor or the contractor’s representative, concurrent delay, delays resulting from two separate causes at the same time

Authors: Heungwook Son, Sungjoo Lee
Abstract:
Recently, due to intensifying competition in several industries, the importance of meeting customer requirements has increased. The role that service plays in satisfying customer‘s requirements is key area of focus. Thus, the concept of using product development-research in the service system has been actively practiced. As strategic decision making tool, various types of the technology roadmap were suggested in the product-service system (PSS). However, the technology roadmap was configured a top-down form around the technologies of the elements. The limitation is that it hard for it to indicate a variety of interrelations. In response, this paper suggests using the planning support tool of PSS for a DSM for the technology roadmap; it consists of the relationship of product-service-technology as a bottom-up form. Therefore, nine types of the technology roadmap of PSS exist. The first defines the relationship of product-service-technology. The second phase identifies output when of the technology roadmaps are adapted to the DSM process. Finally, the DSM-based forms of each type of technology roadmap are presented through case studies. Keywords: DSM, technology roadmap, PSS, product-service system, bottom-up

Authors: Carlos Gonzalez-Flores, Ernesto Liñan-García
Abstract:
A simple and robust approach for developing secure software. A Four Phase methodology consists in developing the non-secure software in phase one, and for the next three phases, one phase for each of the secure developing types (i.e. self-protected software, secure code transformation, and the secure shield). Our methodology requires first the determination and understanding of the type of security level needed for the software. The methodology proposes the use of several teams to accomplish this task. One Software Engineering Developing Team, a Compiler Team, a Specification and Requirements Testing Team, and for each of the secure software developing types: three teams of Secure Software Developing, three teams of Code Breakers, and three teams of Intrusion Analysis. These teams will interact among each other and make decisions to provide a secure software code protected against a required level of intruder. Keywords: secure software, four phases methodology, software engineering, code breakers, intrusion analysis
