2310 A Cultural Materialistic Approach to Toni Morrison’s Beloved and the Bluest Eye
Authors: Irfan Mehmood
Abstract:
The goal of this paper is to examine Toni Morrison's novels Beloved and The Bluest Eye from a cultural materialistic perspective. The history and society of African Americans provide the inspiration for the stories of Beloved and The Bluest Eye. The cultural materialist elements and characteristics of Morrison's literary text will be highlighted in this study. The topic covered in this paper will include racism, gender discrimination, social class differences, and slavery in the text. In other words, the study will focus on the underrepresented groups in society, including women, slaves, and Afro-Americans. In this aspect, Toni Morrison is a fantastic writer whose works are full of diverse races. Morrison uses her incredibly well-informed language and well-produced stories to attempt to illuminate many facets of American life. She establishes a distinctive style of writing that sharply contrasts the suffering and enslavement of Afro-Americans with the traditional writings of Euro-American authors. Morrison shows a profound understanding of the exploitation of Afro-Americans in terms of race, gender, and class conflict in Beloved and The Bluest Eye. A unique culture and the history of a typically ignored set of people whose minds and societies have been permanently changed by class, racial, and gender discrimination were introduced through the study of Morrison's chosen novels. Toni Morrison places a lot of emphasis on the marginalized members of society, particularly in terms of class, ethnicity, and gender, because the majority of the key characters in her book are black. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to concentrate on the culturally materialistic elements of Morrison's Beloved and The Bluest Eye and to ascertain the author's position on these minorities. Keywords: race, slavery, social class, Toni Morrison, African American culture

Authors: Tebogo Sethibe, Jabulile Mabuza
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has been commonly referred to as a ‘black swan event’; it has changed the world, from how people live, learn, work and socialise. It is believed that the pandemic has fast-tracked the adoption of technology in many organisations to ensure business continuity and business sustainability; broadly said, the pandemic has fast-tracked digital transformation (DT) in different organisations. This paper aims to study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on DT in organisations in South Africa by focusing on the changes in IT capabilities in the DT framework. The research design is qualitative. The data collection was through semi-structured interviews with information communication technology (ICT) leaders representing different organisations in South Africa. The data were analysed using the thematic analysis process. The results from the study show that, in terms of ICT in the organisation, the pandemic had a direct and positive impact on ICT strategy and ICT operations. In terms of IT capability transformation, the pandemic resulted in the optimisation and expansion of existing IT capabilities in the organisation and the building of new IT capabilities to meet emerging business needs. In terms of the focus of activities during the pandemic, there seems to be a split in organisations between the primary focus being on ‘digital IT’ or ‘traditional IT’. Overall, the findings of the study show that the pandemic had a positive and significant impact on DT in organisations. However, a definitive conclusion on this would require expanding the scope of the research to all the components of a comprehensive DT framework. This study is significant because it is one of the first studies to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on organisations, on ICT in the organisation, on IT capability transformation and, to a greater extent, DT. The findings from the study show that in response to the pandemic, there is a need for: (i) agility in organisations; (ii) organisations to execute on their existing strategy; (iii) the future-proofing of IT capabilities; (iv) the adoption of a hybrid working model; and for (v) organisations to take risks and embrace new ideas. Keywords: digital transformation, COVID-19, bimodal-IT, digital transformation framework

Procedia PDF Downloads 2762305 Virtue, Truth, Freedom, And The History Of Philosophy
Authors: Ashley DelCorno
Abstract:
GEM Anscombe’s 1958 essay Modern Moral Philosophy and the tradition of virtue ethics that followed has given rise to the restoration (or, more plainly, the resurrection) of Aristotle as something of an authority figure. Alisdair MacIntyre and Martha Nussbaum are proponents, for example, not just of Aristotle’s relevancy but also of his apparent implicit authority. That said, it’s not clear that the schema imagined by virtue ethicists accurately describes moral life or that it does not inadvertently work to impoverish genuine decision-making. If the label ‘virtue’ is categorically denied to some groups (while arbitrarily afforded to others), it can only turn on itself, thus rendering ridiculous its own premise. Likewise, as an inescapable feature of virtue ethics, Aristotelean binaries like ‘virtue/vice’ and ‘voluntary/involuntary’ offer up false dichotomies that may seriously compromise an agent’s ability to conceptualize choices that are truly free and rooted in meaningful criteria. Here, this topic is analyzed through a feminist lens predicated on the known paradoxes of patriarchy. The work of feminist theorists Jacqui Alexander, Katharine Angel, Simone de Beauvoir, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, Imani Perry, and Amia Srinivasan serves as important guideposts, and the argument here is built from a key tenet of black feminist thought regarding scarcity and possibility. Above all, it’s clear that though the philosophical tradition of virtue ethics presents itself as recovering the place of agency in ethics, its premises possess crippling limitations toward the achievement of this goal. These include, most notably, virtue ethics’ binding analysis of history, as well as its axiomatic attachment to obligatory clauses, problematic reading-in of Aristotle and arbitrary commitment to predetermined and competitively patriarchal ideas of what counts as a virtue. Keywords: feminist history, the limits of utopic imagination, curatorial creation, truth, virtue, freedom

Authors: Sami Ali Metwally, Bedour Helmy Abou-Leila, Hussien Ibrahim Abdel-Shafy
Abstract:
This study was carried out at the pilot plant area in the National Research Centre during the two successive seasons, 2020 and 2022. The aim is to investigate the response of vegetative growth and chemical constituents of sunflowers plants irrigated by two types of wastewater, namely: black wastewater W1 (Bathroom) and grey wastewater W1, under irradiation conditions of helium-neon (He-Ne) laser. The examined data indicated that irrigation of W1 significantly increased the growth and flowering parameters (plant height, leaves number, leaves area, leaves fresh and dry weight, flower diameter, flower stem length, flower stem thickness, number of days to flower, and total chlorophyll). Treated sunflower plants with 0 to 10 min. recorded an increase in the fresh weight and dry weight of leaves. However, the superiority of increasing vase life and delaying flowers were recorded by prolonging exposure time by up to 10 min. Regarding the effect of interaction treatments, the data indicated that the highest values on almost growth parameters were obtained from plants treated with W1+0 laser followed by W2+10 min. laser, compared with all interaction treatments. As for flowering parameters, the interactions between W2+2 min. time exposure, W1+0 time, w1+10 min., and w1+2 min. exposures recorded the highest values on flower diameter, flower stem length, flower stem thickness, vase life, and delaying flowering. Keywords: greywater, sunflower plant, water reuse, vegetative growth, laser radiation
Procedia PDF Downloads 782303 The Use of Degradation Measures to Design Reliability Test Plans
Authors: Stephen V. Crowder, Jonathan W. Lane
Abstract:
With short production development times, there is an increased need to demonstrate product reliability relatively quickly with minimal testing. In such cases there may be few if any observed failures. Thus it may be difficult to assess reliability using the traditional reliability test plans that measure only time (or cycles) to failure. For many components, degradation measures will contain important information about performance and reliability. These measures can be used to design a minimal test plan, in terms of number of units placed on test and duration of the test, necessary to demonstrate a reliability goal. In this work we present a case study involving an electronic component subject to degradation. The data, consisting of 42 degradation paths of cycles to failure, are first used to estimate a reliability function. Bootstrapping techniques are then used to perform power studies and develop a minimal reliability test plan for future production of this component. Keywords: degradation measure, time to failure distribution, bootstrap, computational science

Authors: Huai-Cong Liu, Tae Chul Jeong, Ju Lee
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop an electric circuit method (ECM) to ascertain the core loss influence on a Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) in the condition of the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA). SynRM for fan usually operates on the constant torque region, at synchronous speed the MTPA control is adopted due to current vector. However, finite element analysis (FEA) program is not sufficient exactly to reflect how the core loss influenced on the current vector. This paper proposed a method to calculate the current vector with consideration of core loss. The precision of current vector by ECM is useful for MTPA control. The result shows that ECM analysis is closer to the actual motor’s characteristics by testing with a 7.5kW SynRM drive System. Keywords: core loss, SynRM, current vector, magnetic saturation, maximum torque per ampere (MTPA)

Abstract:
Anti-symmetric wave propagation along the particle motion of the wedge waves is known as anti-symmetric flexural (ASF) modes which travel along the wedge tips of the mid-plane apex with a small truncation. This paper investigates the characteristics of the ASF modes propagation with the wedge tip crack. The simulation and experimental results obtained by a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model explained the contact acoustic non-linear (CAN) behavior in explicit dynamics in ABAQUS and the ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) method is used for defect detection. The effect of various parameters on its high and low-level conversion modes are known for complex reflections and transmissions involved with direct reflections and transmissions. The results are used to predict the location of crack through complex transmission and reflection coefficients. Keywords: ASF mode, crack detection, finite elements method, laser ultrasound technique, wedge waves
Procedia PDF Downloads 1332293 Disrupted or Discounted Cash Flow: Impact of Digitisation on Business Valuation
Authors: Matthias Haerri, Tobias Huettche, Clemens Kustner
Abstract:
This article discusses the impact of digitization on business valuation. In order to become and remain ‘digital’, investments are necessary whose return on investment (ROI) often remains vague. This uncertainty is contradictory for a valuation, that rely on predictable cash flows, fixed capital structures and the steady state. However digitisation does not make a company valuation impossible, but traditional approaches must be reconsidered. The authors identify four areas that are to be changing: (1) Tools instead of intuition - In the future, company valuation will neither be art nor science, but craft. This does not require intuition, but experience and good tools. Digital evaluation tools beyond Excel will therefore gain in importance. (2) Real-time instead of deadline - At present, company valuations are always carried out on a case-by-case basis and on a specific key date. This will change with the digitalization and the introduction of web-based valuation tools. Company valuations can thus not only be carried out faster and more efficiently, but can also be offered more frequently. Instead of calculating the value for a previous key date, current and real-time valuations can be carried out. (3) Predictive planning instead of analysis of the past - Past data will also be needed in the future, but its use will not be limited to monovalent time series or key figure analyses. With pictures of ‘black swans’ and the ‘turkey illusion’ it was made clear to us that we build forecasts on too few data points of the past and underestimate the power of chance. Predictive planning can help here. (4) Convergence instead of residual value - Digital transformation shortens the lifespan of viable business models. If companies want to live forever, they have to change forever. For the company valuation, this means that the business model valid on the valuation date only has a limited service life. Keywords: business valuation, corporate finance, digitisation, disruption

Procedia PDF Downloads 1732289 Low Sulfur Diesel-Like Fuel From Quick Remediation Process of Waste Oil Sludge
Authors: Isam A. H. Al Zubaidy
Abstract:
A quick process may be needed to get the benefit the big generated quantity of waste oil sludge (WOS). The process includes the mixing process of WOS with commercial diesel fuel. Different ratios of WOS to diesel fuel were prepared ranging 1:1 to 20:1 by mass. The mixture was continuously mixing for 10 minutes using bench type overhead stirrer and followed by filtration process to separate the soil waste from filtrate oil product. The quantity and the physical properties of the oil filtrate were measured. It was found that the addition of up to 15% WOS to diesel fuel was accepted without dramatic changes to the properties of diesel fuel. The amount of waste oil sludge was decreased by about 60% by mass. This means that about 60 % of the mass of sludge was recovered as light fuel oil. The physical properties of the resulting fuel from 10% sludge mixing ratio showed that the specific gravity, ash content, carbon residue, asphaltene content, viscosity, diesel index, cetane number, and calorific value were affected slightly. The color was changed to light black color. The sulfur content was increased also. This requires other processes to reduce the sulfur content of the resulting light fuel. A new desulfurization process was achieved using adsorption techniques with activated biomaterial to reduce the sulfur content to acceptable limits. Adsorption process by ZnCl₂ activated date palm kernel powder was effective for improvement of the physical properties of diesel like fuel. The final sulfur content was increased to 0.185 wt%. This diesel like fuel can be used in all tractors, buses, tracks inside and outside the refineries. The solid remaining seems to be smooth and can be mixed with asphalt mixture for asphalting the roads or can be used with other materials as an asphalt coating material for constructed buildings. Through this process, valuable fuel has been recovered, and the amount of waste material had decreased. Keywords: oil sludge, diesel fuel, blending process, filtration process

Authors: Bator Shagdyrov, Elena Zorina, Tamara Nesterenko
Abstract:
The aim of the research was to develop a design of micromechanical gyroscope, which will be used in the automotive industry, safety systems and anti-lock braking system. The research resulted in improvement of one of the technical parameters – bandwidth. In the process of mass production of micromechanical sensors, problems occurred with their use. One of the problems was a narrow bandwidth typical for the gyroscopes with a high-quality factor. A constructive way of increasing bandwidth is to use multimass systems via secondary oscillations axis. When constructing, the main task was to choose the frequency - phases and antiphases as close to each other as possible, and set the frequency of the primary oscillation evenly between them. Investigations are carried out using the T-Flex CAD finite element program and T-Flex ANALYSIS support package. The results obtained are planned to use in the future for the production of an experimental model of development and testing in practice of characteristics derived by theoretical means. Keywords: bandwidth, inertial mass, mathematical model, micromechanical gyroscope, micromechanics

Abstract:
The continual demands for increasing resolution and dynamic range in CMOS image sensors have resulted in exponential increases in the amount of data that needs to be read out of an image sensor, and existing readouts cannot keep up with this demand. Interesting approaches such as sparse and burst readouts have been proposed and show promise, but at considerable trade-offs in other specifications. To this end, we have begun designing and evaluating various new readout topologies centered around an attempt to parallelize the sensor readout. In this paper, we have designed, simulated, and started testing a new light-controlled oscillator topology with dual column and row readouts. We expect the parallel readout structure to offer greater speed and alleviate the trade-off typical in this topology, where slow pixels present a major framerate bottleneck. Keywords: CMOS image sensors, high-speed capture, wide dynamic range, light controlled oscillator

Authors: Apollinaire Barme, Simon Tamayo, Arthur Gaudron
Abstract:
This paper presents a statistical approach to identify explanatory variables linearly related to e-commerce sales. The proposed methodology allows specifying a regression model in order to quantify the relevance between openly available data (economic and demographic) and national e-commerce sales. The proposed methodology consists in collecting data, preselecting input variables, performing regressions for choosing variables and models, testing and validating. The usefulness of the proposed approach is twofold: on the one hand, it allows identifying the variables that influence e- commerce sales with an accessible approach. And on the other hand, it can be used to model future sales from the input variables. Results show that e-commerce is linearly dependent on 11 economic and demographic indicators. Keywords: e-commerce, statistical modeling, regression, empirical research

Abstract:
With the increasing complexity of cyberspace security, the cyber-attack attribution has become an important challenge of the security protection systems. The difficult points of cyber-attack attribution were forced on the problems of huge data handling and key data missing. According to this situation, this paper presented a reasoning method of cyber-attack attribution based on threat intelligence. The method utilizes the intrusion kill chain model and Bayesian network to build attack chain and evidence chain of cyber-attack on threat intelligence platform through data calculation, analysis and reasoning. Then, we used a number of cyber-attack events which we have observed and analyzed to test the reasoning method and demo system, the result of testing indicates that the reasoning method can provide certain help in cyber-attack attribution. Keywords: reasoning, Bayesian networks, cyber-attack attribution, Kill Chain, threat intelligence

Authors: Tarek A. Mekail, Walid M. A. Elmagid
Abstract:
Many researches have concentrated on improving the aerodynamic performance of wind turbine blade through testing and theoretical studies. A small wind turbine blade is designed, fabricated and tested. The power performance of small horizontal axis wind turbines is simulated in details using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). The three-dimensional CFD models are presented using ANSYS-CFX v13 software for predicting the performance of a small horizontal axis wind turbine. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data measured from a small wind turbine model, which designed according to a vehicle-based test system. The analysis of wake effect and aerodynamic of the blade can be carried out when the rotational effect was simulated. Finally, comparison between experimental, numerical and analytical performance has been done. The comparison is fairly good. Keywords: small wind turbine, CFD of wind turbine, CFD, performance of wind turbine, test of small wind turbine, wind turbine aerodynamic, 3D model

Abstract:
The dynamic development of photovoltaics in the 21st century has resulted in more possibilities for using photovoltaic systems. In order to reduce emissions, a retrofitting of vehicles with photovoltaic modules has recently become increasingly popular. Preparing such an installation, however, requires professional knowledge and compliance with safety rules. The paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of some types of flexible photovoltaic modules that can be applied to mobile installations, types and causes of damage to photovoltaic modules as well as the most frequent types of misinstallation. Our attention has been drawn to the risk of fire caused by misintallation or defective insulation and the need to closely monitor mobile installations, for example by a non-destructive testing with a thermal imaging camera. The paper also presents certain selected results of the research conducted at the Lublin University of Technology. This work has been financed by the Polish National Centre for Research and Development, under Grant Agreement No. PBS2/A6/16/2013.Keywords: flexible PV module, mobile PV module, photovoltaic module, photovoltaic

Abstract:
Fire performance is a crucial aspect to consider when designing cladding products, and testing this performance is extremely expensive. Appropriate use of numerical simulation of fire performance has the potential to reduce the total number of fire tests required when designing a product by eliminating poor-performing design ideas early in the design phase. Due to the complexity of fire and the large spectrum of failures it can cause, multi-disciplinary models are needed to capture the complex fire behavior and its structural effects on its surroundings. Working alongside Tata Steel U.K., the authors have focused on completing a coupled CFD-FEA simulation model suited to test Polyisocyanurate (PIR) based sandwich panel products to gain confidence before costly experimental standards testing. The sandwich panels are part of a thermally insulating façade system primarily for large non-domestic buildings. The work presented in this paper compares two coupling methodologies of a replicated physical experimental standards test LPS 1181-1, carried out by Tata Steel U.K. The two coupling methodologies that are considered within this research are; one-way and two-way. A one-way coupled analysis consists of importing thermal data from the CFD solver into the FEA solver. A two-way coupling analysis consists of continuously importing the updated changes in thermal data, due to the fire's behavior, to the FEA solver throughout the simulation. Likewise, the mechanical changes will also be updated back to the CFD solver to include geometric changes within the solution. For CFD calculations, a solver called Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) has been chosen due to its adapted numerical scheme to focus solely on fire problems. Validation of FDS applicability has been achieved in past benchmark cases. In addition, an FEA solver called ABAQUS has been chosen to model the structural response to the fire due to its crushable foam plasticity model, which can accurately model the compressibility of PIR foam. An open-source code called FDS-2-ABAQUS is used to couple the two solvers together, using several python modules to complete the process, including failure checks. The coupling methodologies and experimental data acquired from Tata Steel U.K are compared using several variables. The comparison data includes; gas temperatures, surface temperatures, and mechanical deformation of the panels. Conclusions are drawn, noting improvements to be made on the current coupling open-source code FDS-2-ABAQUS to make it more applicable to Tata Steel U.K sandwich panel products. Future directions for reducing the computational cost of the simulation are also considered. Keywords: fire engineering, numerical coupling, sandwich panels, thermo fluids

Authors: Eszter Hamza
Abstract:
The competitiveness of economic operators is based on interoperability, which is relatively low in Hungary. The development of co-operation is high priority in Common Agricultural Policy 2014-2020. The aim of the paper to assess co-operations in Hungarian agriculture, estimate the economic outputs and benefits of co-operations, based on statistical data processing and literature. Further objective is to explore the potential of agricultural co-operation with the help of interviews and questionnaire survey. The research seeks to answer questions as to what fundamental factors play role in the development of co-operation, and what are the motivations of the actors and the key success factors and pitfalls. The results were analysed using econometric methods. In Hungarian agriculture we can find several forms of co-operation: cooperatives, producer groups (PG) and producer organizations (PO), machinery cooperatives, integrator companies, product boards and interbranch organisations. Despite the several appearance of the agricultural co-operation, their economic weight is significantly lower in Hungary than in western European countries. Considering the agricultural importance, the integrator companies represent the most weight among the co-operations forms. Hungarian farmers linked to co-operations or organizations mostly in relation to procurement and sales. Less than 30 percent of surveyed farmers are members of a producer organization or cooperative. The trust level is low among farmers. The main obstacle to the development of formalized co-operation, is producers' risk aversion and the black economy in agriculture. Producers often prefer informal co-operation instead of long-term contractual relationships. The Hungarian agricultural co-operations are characterized by non-dynamic development, but slow qualitative change. For the future, one breakout point could be the association of producer groups and organizations, which in addition to the benefits of market concentration, in the dissemination of knowledge, advisory network operation and innovation can act more effectively. Keywords: agriculture, co-operation, producer organisation, trust level
