Authors: Chuanju Cheng
Abstract:
In Taiwan, the system of indigenous reserved land was established in 1928 during the Japanese rule. The purpose of setting up indigenous reserved land is to support the livelihood of tribal peoples who live in the mountainous area. Since 1945, the KMT government has kept the indigenous reserved land; in principle, only indigenous people can use indigenous reserved land. However, the government also makes some exceptions for non-indigenous peoples to use the land. Furthermore, since 1966, an indigenous individual can have ownership (fee simple) over the land he/she uses. Recent studies showed that there are many problems regarding the indigenous reserved lands, such as indigenous peoples have been losing ownership of their land (both legally and illegally), mismatched data of the true owner and the nominal owner, overutilization of the reserved land and so on. Using a Truku tribe in Hualien County as an example, this paper tries to find out how many people still own indigenous reserved land, do land owners constantly utilize their lands, and if so, whether or not (and by what extent) the indigenous reserved land support the livelihood of tribal peoples? After ten months of working data-collecting, we’ve successfully collected 327 questionnaires (70% of total households); preliminary research results show that less than 5% of indigenous reserved land in and around that specific Truku tribe is owned by tribal people. And most of the landowners do not utilize indigenous reserved land. It seems that the indigenous reserved land system does not meet its legislative goals and needs to be redesigned. Keywords: indigenous people, truku nation, taiwan, indigenous reserved land, poverty, economic development

Authors: Temitope Faloye
Abstract:
The absence of equity and transparency in Nigeria's economic system has resulted in unemployment. Women’s unemployment rate remains higher because women's range of jobs is often narrower due to discriminatory attitudes of employers and gender segregation in the labor market. Gender inequality is one of the strong factors of unemployment, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, where the female gender is marginalized in the labor force market. However, gender equality in terms of labor market access and employment condition has not yet been attained. Feminist theory is considered as an appropriate theory for this study. The study will use a mixed-method design, collecting qualitative and quantitative data to provide answers to the research questions. Therefore, the research study aims to investigate the present situation of gender inequality in the Nigerian labor market. Keywords: unemployment, gender inequality, gender equality, labor market, female graduate

Abstract:
Recently, English has become the language of globalization and technology. In turn, this has resulted in a seemingly bewildering array of influences and trends in the domain of TESOL curriculum. In light of these changes, higher education has to provide a new and more powerful kind of education. It should prepare students to be more engaged citizens, more capable to solve complex problems at work, and well prepared to lead meaningful life. In response to this, universities, colleges, schools, and departments have to work out in light of the requirements and challenges of the global and technological era. Consequently they have to focus on the adoption of contemporary curriculum which goes in line with the pedagogical shifts from teaching –centered approach to learning centered approach. Ideally, there has been noticeable emphasis on the crucial importance of developing and professionalizing teachers in order to engage them in the process of curriculum development and action research. This is a qualitative study that aims at understanding and exploring the process of designing EFL courses by teachers at the tertiary level from the perspectives of the participants in a professional context in TESOL, Department of English, a private college in Oman. Authors: Ashish Dhamaniya, Satish Chandra
Abstract:
Pedestrian crossings at grade in India are very common and pedestrian cross the carriageway at undesignated locations where they found the path to access the residential and commercial areas. Present paper aims to determine capacity loss on 4-lane urban arterials due to such crossings. Base capacity which is defined as the capacity without any influencing factor is determined on 4-lane roads by collecting speed-flow data in the field. It is observed that base capacity is varying from 1636 pcu/hr/lane to 2043 pcu/hr/lane which is attributed to the different operating conditions at different sections. The variation in base capacity is related with the operating speed on the road sections. Free flow speed of standard car is measured in the field and 85th percentile of this speed is reported as operating speed. Capacity of the 4-lane road sections with different pedestrian cross-flow is also determined and compared with the capacity of base section. The difference in capacity values is reported as capacity loss due to the average number of pedestrian crossings in one hour. It has been observed that capacity of 4-lane road section reduces from 18 to 30 percent with pedestrian cross-flow of 800 to 1550 peds/hr. A model is proposed between capacity loss and pedestrian cross-flow from the observed data. Keywords: capacity, free flow speed, pedestrian, urban arterial, transport

Authors: Justin Tang
Abstract:
Balance tests are frequently used to diagnose concussions on the sidelines of sporting events. Manual scoring, however, is labor intensive and subjective, and many concussions go undetected. This study institutes a novel approach to conducting the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) more quantitatively using Microsoft’s gaming system Kinect, which uses a contactless sensor and several cameras to receive data and estimate body limb positions. Using a machine learning approach, Visual Gesture Builder, and a deterministic approach, MATLAB, we tested whether the Kinect can differentiate between “correct” and erroneous stances of the BESS. We created the two separate solutions by recording test videos to teach the Kinect correct stances and by developing a code using Java. Twenty-two subjects were asked to perform a series of BESS tests while the Kinect was collecting data. The Kinect recorded the subjects and mapped key joints onto their bodies to obtain angles and measurements that are interpreted by the software. Through VGB and MATLAB, the videos are analyzed to enumerate the number of errors committed during testing. The resulting statistics demonstrate a high correlation between manual scoring and the Kinect approaches, indicating the viability of the use of remote tracking devices in conducting concussion tests. Keywords: automated, concussion detection, contactless sensors, microsoft kinect

Authors: Jarbas Lopes Cardoso Jr., Frederic Andres, Alexandre Guitton, Asanee Kawtrakul, Silvio E. Barbin
Abstract:
The important objective of the CyberBrain Mass Agriculture Alarm Acquisition and Analysis (CBMa4) project is to minimize the impacts of diseases and disasters on rice cultivation. For example, early detection of insects will reduce the volume of insecticides that is applied to the rice fields through the use of CBMa4 platform. In order to reach this goal, two major factors need to be considered: (1) the social network of smart farmers; and (2) the warning data alarm acquisition and analysis component. This paper outlines the process for collecting the warning and improving the decision-making result to the warning. It involves two sub-processes: the warning collection and the understanding enrichment. Human sensors combine basic suitable data processing techniques in order to extract warning related semantic according to collective intelligence. We identify each warning by a semantic content called 'warncons' with multimedia metaphors and metadata related to these metaphors. It is important to describe the metric to measuring the relation among warncons. With this knowledge, a collective intelligence-based decision-making approach determines the action(s) to be launched regarding one or a set of warncons. Keywords: agricultural engineering, warning systems, social network services, context awareness

Procedia PDF Downloads 44224158 Exploring the History of Chinese Music Acoustic Technology through Data Fluctuations
Abstract:
The study of extant musical sites can provide a side-by-side picture of historical ethnomusicological information. In their data collection on Chinese opera houses, researchers found that one Ming Dynasty opera house reached a width of nearly 18 meters, while all opera houses of the same period and after it was far from such a width, being significantly smaller than 18 meters. The historical transient fluctuations in the data dimension of width that caused Chinese theatres to fluctuate in the absence of construction scale constraints have piqued the interest of researchers as to why there is data variation in width. What factors have contributed to the lack of further expansion in the width of theatres? To address this question, this study used a comparative approach to conduct a venue experiment between this theater stage and another theater stage for non-heritage opera performances, collecting the subjective perceptions of performers and audiences at different theater stages, as well as combining BK Connect platform software to measure data such as echo and delay. From the subjective and objective results, it is inferred that the Chinese ancients discovered and understood the acoustical phenomenon of the Haas effect by exploring the effect of stage width on musical performance and appreciation of listening states during the Ming Dynasty and utilized this discovery to serve music in subsequent stage construction. This discovery marked a node of evolution in Chinese architectural acoustics technology driven by musical demands. It is also instructive to note that, in contrast to many of the world's "unsuccessful civilizations," China can use a combination of heritage and intangible cultural research to chart a clear, demand-driven course for the evolution of human music technology, and that the findings of such research will complete the course of human exploration of music acoustics. The findings of such research will complete the journey of human exploration of music acoustics, and this practical experience can be applied to the exploration and understanding of other musical heritage base data. Keywords: Haas effect, musical acoustics, history of acoustical technology, Chinese opera stage, structure

Abstract:
Bengali is widely spoken in the world, but Bengali speech recognition has not received much attention. Here, we are conducting the toughest task because it must be performed in a noisy place in our study. Another challenge we overcome is dealing with speeches and collecting data on third genders, and our approach is to recognize the gender in speeches. All of the Bangla speech samples used in this study were short and were taken from real-life situations. We employed the male, female, and third-gender categories of speech. In this study, we derive the feature from the spoken word. We used MFCC(1-20), ZCR,rolloff,spec_cen, RMSE, and chroma_stft. Here, we used the algorithms Gboost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, and Logistic Regression (LR) to assess the performance of recognition metrics, and we got the highest performance from random forest in recognizing the gender of the speeches. Keywords: MFCC, ZCR, Bengali, LR, RMSE, roll-off, Gboost

Authors: Raymond Feng, Shadi Ghiasi
Abstract:
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive technique that records electrical activity in the brain using scalp electrodes. Researchers have studied the use of EEG to detect emotions and moods by collecting signals from participants and analyzing how those signals correlate with their activities. In this study, researchers investigated the relationship between EEG signals and music enjoyment. Participants listened to music while data was collected. During the signal-processing phase, power spectral densities (PSDs) were computed from the signals, and dominant brainwave frequencies were extracted from the PSDs to form a comprehensive feature matrix. A machine learning approach was then taken to find correlations between the processed data and the music enjoyment level indicated by the participants. To improve on previous research, multiple machine learning models were employed, including K-Nearest Neighbors Classifier, Support Vector Classifier, and Decision Tree Classifier. Hyperparameters were used to fine-tune each model to further increase its performance. The experiments showed that a strong correlation exists, with the Decision Tree Classifier with hyperparameters yielding 85% accuracy. This study proves that EEG is a reliable means to detect music enjoyment and has future applications, including personalized music recommendation, mood adjustment, and mental health therapy. Keywords: EEG, electroencephalogram, machine learning, mood, music enjoyment, physiological signals
