7 Developing and Evaluating the Impacts of Specialized Health Education Modules on Malaria Prevention for Pregnant Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Authors: Ahmed A. Balami, Salmiah Md. Said, Nor Afiah Zulkefli, Norsa’adah Bachok, Bala Audu

Abstract:

The World Health Organization prescribes that women living in malaria-endemic regions sleep under an insecticide-treated net (ITN) and comply with intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). However, compliance with these measures is generally poor in Nigeria, despite the high burden of malaria and its complications in pregnancy, as well as the proven efficacy of these preventive measures. This study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate the impacts of information-motivation-behavioral skills-based health education modules (IMB-HEMOD) on malaria prevention among pregnant women in Borno state, Nigeria. A parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted, enrolling 372 pregnant women (186 participants each in the intervention or control groups) at an antenatal clinic in Borno state, Nigeria. IMB-HEMOD on malaria prevention was delivered to the intervention group. This comprised four sessions and was conducted over four hours. Session one comprised lectures on malaria causative agents, transmission, symptoms, complications, and prevention. Session two was a facilitated interactive session, where participants brainstormed through the potential barriers to compliance with these preventive measures and collectively developed solutions to them. Sessions three and four entailed practical demonstrations of how to use these preventive measures. Participants in the control group received a dummy intervention in the form of health education on breastfeeding, delivered by the same facilitator, for a similar duration, and using a similar approach as the experimental intervention. Validated questionnaires were used to collect baseline and follow-up data (at two months and four months post-intervention) on the dependent variables – malaria prevention knowledge, motivation, behavioral skills, practices, and clinical outcomes. The generalized linear mixed-models analysis was used to test the effects of the intervention on the dependent variables. The total knowledge, motivation, and behavioral skills scores of the intervention group were significantly higher by 12.8% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 9.50 - 16.01), 8.6% (95% CI: 6.74 - 10.36), and 6.4% (95% CI: 4.41 – 8.29) respectively over the control group. The results also showed that 32% (95% CI: 6 – 59) and 37% (95% CI: 26 – 47) of participants in the intervention group slept at least one day more frequently under an insecticide-treated net (ITN), and took one dose more of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp), compared to the control group. The intervention group also achieved 0.8% (95% CI: 0.53 – 1.07) higher hematocrit levels compared to the control group. Overall, the study results revealed the promising potential of the modules for not only boosting compliance with the prescribed malaria preventive measures but also improving clinical outcomes. It is thus recommended to adopt the modules into routine antenatal care health education.

6 'Infection in the Sentence': The Castration of a Black Woman's Dream of Authorship as Manifested in Buchi Emecheta's Second Class Citizen

Authors: Aseel Hatif Jassam, Hadeel Hatif Jassam

Abstract:

The paper discusses the phallocentric discourse that is challenged by women in general and of women of color in particular in spite of the simultaneity of oppression due to race, class, and gender in the diaspora. Therefore, the paper gives a brief account of women's experience in the light of postcolonial feminist theory. The paper also cast light on the theories of Luce Irigaray and Helen Cixous, two Feminist theorists who support and advise women to have their own discourse to challenge the infectious patriarchal sentence advocated by Sigmund Freud and Harold Bloom's model of literary history. Black women authors like BuchiEmecheta as well as her alter ego Adah, a Nigerian-born girl and the protagonist of her semi-autobiographical novel, Second Class Citizen, suffer from this phallocentric and oppressive sentence and displacement as they migrate from Nigeria, a former British colony where they feel marginalized to North London with the hope of realizing their dreams. Yet, in the British diaspora, they get culturally shocked and continue to suffer from further marginalization due to class and race and are insulted and interiorized ironically by their patriarchal husbands who try to put an end to their dreams of authorship. With the phallocentric belief that women aren't capable of self-representation in the background of their mindsets, the violent Sylvester Onwordi and Francis Obi, the husbands of both Emecheta and Adah, respectively have practiced oppression on them by burning their own authoritative voice, represented by the novels they write while they are struggling with their economically atrocious living experience in the British diaspora.

5 Flow and Heat Transfer of a Nanofluid over a Shrinking Sheet

Authors: N. Bachok, N. L. Aleng, N. M. Arifin, A. Ishak, N. Senu

Abstract:

The problem of laminar fluid flow which results from the shrinking of a permeable surface in a nanofluid has been investigated numerically. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. A similarity solution is presented which depends on the mass suction parameter S, Prandtl number Pr, Lewis number Le, Brownian motion number Nb and thermophoresis number Nt. It was found that the reduced Nusselt number is decreasing function of each dimensionless number.

4 Zero-Dissipative Explicit Runge-Kutta Method for Periodic Initial Value Problems

Authors: N. Senu, I. A. Kasim, F. Ismail, N. Bachok

Abstract:

In this paper zero-dissipative explicit Runge-Kutta method is derived for solving second-order ordinary differential equations with periodical solutions. The phase-lag and dissipation properties for Runge-Kutta (RK) method are also discussed. The new method has algebraic order three with dissipation of order infinity. The numerical results for the new method are compared with existing method when solving the second-order differential equations with periodic solutions using constant step size.

3 Effect of Magnetic Field on Mixed Convection Boundary Layer Flow over an Exponentially Shrinking Vertical Sheet with Suction

Authors: S. S. P. M. Isa, N. M. Arifin, R. Nazar, N. Bachok, F. M. Ali, I. Pop

Abstract:

A theoretical study has been presented to describe the boundary layer flow and heat transfer on an exponentially shrinking sheet with a variable wall temperature and suction, in the presence of magnetic field. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into ordinary differential equations by similarity transformation, which are then solved numerically using the shooting method. Results for the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, velocity profiles as well as temperature profiles are presented through graphs and tables for several sets of values of the parameters. The effects of the governing parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined.

2 Forced Convection Boundary Layer Flow of a Casson Fluid over a Moving Permeable Flat Plate beneath a Uniform Free Stream

Authors: N. M. Arifin, S. P. M. Isa, R. Nazar, N. Bachok, F. M. Ali, I. Pop

Abstract:

In this paper, the steady forced convection boundary layer flow of a Casson fluid past a moving permeable semi-infinite flat plate beneath a uniform free stream is investigated. The mathematical problem reduces to a pair of noncoupled ordinary differential equations by similarity transformation, which is then solved numerically using the shooting method. Both the cases when the plate moves into or out of the origin are considered. Effects of the non-Newtonian (Casson) parameter, moving parameter, suction or injection parameter and Eckert number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Dual solutions are found to exist for each value of the governing parameters.

1 Marine Ecosystem Mapping of Taman Laut Labuan: The First Habitat Mapping Effort to Support Marine Parks Management in Malaysia

Authors: K. Ismail, A. Ali, R. C. Hasan, I. Khalil, Z. Bachok, N. M. Said, A. M. Muslim, M. S. Che Din, W. S. Chong

Abstract:

The marine ecosystem in Malaysia holds invaluable potential in terms of economics, food security, pharmaceuticals components and protection from natural hazards. Although exploration of oil and gas industry and fisheries are active within Malaysian waters, knowledge of the seascape and ecological functioning of benthic habitats is still extremely poor in the marine parks around Malaysia due to the lack of detailed seafloor information. Consequently, it is difficult to manage marine resources effectively, protect ecologically important areas and set legislation to safeguard the marine parks. The limited baseline data hinders scientific linkage to support effective marine spatial management in Malaysia. This became the main driver behind the first seabed mapping effort at the national level. Taman Laut Labuan (TLL) is located to the west coast of Sabah and to the east of South China Sea. The total area of TLL is approximately 158.15 km2, comprises of three islands namely Pulau Kuraman, Rusukan Besar and Rusukan Kecil and is characterised by shallow fringing reef with few submerged shallow reef. The unfamiliar rocky shorelines limit the survey of multibeam echosounder to area with depth more than 10 m. Whereas, singlebeam and side scan sonar systems were used to acquire the data for area with depth less than 10 m. By integrating data from multibeam bathymetry and backscatter with singlebeam bathymetry and side sonar images, we produce a substrate map and coral coverage map for the TLL using i) marine landscape mapping technique and ii) RSOBIA ArcGIS toolbar (developed by T. Le Bas). We take the initiative to explore the ability of aerial drone and satellite image (WorldView-3) to derive the depths and substrate type within the intertidal and subtidal zone where it is not accessible via acoustic mapping. Although the coverage was limited, the outcome showed a promising technique to be incorporated towards establishing a guideline to facilitate a standard practice for efficient marine spatial management in Malaysia.
