7 Green Chemistry Approach to Enhancing Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Gloves with Biopolymers for Improved Mechanical Strength and Biodegradability

Authors: Nurhidayatullaili Muhd Julkapli, Erfan Suryani Abdul Rashid

Abstract:

The use of nitrile butadiene (NBR) gloves in commercial and industrial settings has been limited due to their deficiencies in mechanical strength, biodegradability, and free radical stability. Compared to natural rubber, NBR gloves exhibit lower flexibility, strength, and puncture resistance, and they become unstable when exposed to chemical agents. Additionally, their nonbiodegradable nature presents disposal challenges. To address these issues, a multifunctional nanomaterial containing sulfonated-nanocrystalline cellulose-antioxidant (ANCC) was developed to enhance the mechanical and stability characteristics of NBR gloves while improving biodegradability. The inclusion of gallic acid (GA) antioxidants did not alter the morphology of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) but significantly reduced its crystallinity. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) analysis confirmed the formation of chemical bonds between the carbonyl group and sulfonated NCC at 1645 cm-1. The efficacy of GA in both non-modified nanocellulose and sulfonated-nanocrystal cellulose-antioxidant (at a 1:4 ratio) was assessed using the DPPH test, revealing an IC50 value of less than 3mg. Various aspect ratios of NCC and ANCC were synthesized to evaluate the mechanical and thermal properties of NBR/NCC and NBR/ANCC composites at optimized loadings. NCC was produced via the acid hydrolysis method, while NBR composites were prepared using a dipping technique to simulate glove production conditions. NBR/NCC5 exhibited the highest modulus of elasticity (MOE) at 500% (8.6 MPa), with the highest elongation at break (770%) and tensile strength (27 MPa). NBR/ANCC5 demonstrated superior elongation at break (1200%) compared to pure NBR. Increased carbonyl content enhanced the surface activity of ANCC, leading to higher elongation at break due to the reaction between carbonyl and sulfonated NCC. NBR/ANCC5 composites exhibited superior biodegradability, showing an 8% weight loss difference compared to NBR/NCC5 over six months. Thermal stability increased in both NBR/NCC and NBR/ANCC composites with higher filler loading. The formation of a Zn/NCC complex and percolation network at lower NCC concentrations were crucial in enhancing the thermal stability of the nanocomposite. The interactions between Zn2+ ions and polar carbonyl and hydroxyl groups formed dative covalent bonds. Notably, commercial NBR contains some percentage of carboxylic groups, allowing the formation of dative covalent bonds with Zn2+ ions. Additionally, the highly crystalline and nanosized nature of ANCC played a key role in enhancing the flexibility and strength of NBR composites. This study introduces an alternate approach for environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable glove production by incorporating high-performance additives into NBR compounding formulas.

Abstract:

The subgrade formation is an important element of the railway structure which holds overall track stability. Conventional track maintenance involves many substructure component replacements, as well as track re-ballasting on a regular basis is partially contributed to the embankment's long-term settlement problem. For subgrade long-term stability analysis, the geophysical method is commonly being used to diagnose those hidden sources/mechanisms of track deterioration problems that the normal visual method is unable to detect. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is one of the applicable geophysical tools that are helpful in railway subgrade inspection/track monitoring due to its flexibility and reliability of the analysis. The ERT was conducted at KM 23.0 of Pinang Tunggal track to investigate the subgrade of railway track through the characterization/mapping on track formation profiling which was directly generated using 2D analysis of Res2dinv software. The profiles will allow examination of the presence and spatial extent of a significant subgrade layer and screening of any poor contact of soil boundary. Based on the finding, there is a mix/interpretation/intermixing of an interlayer between the sub-ballast and the sand. Although the embankment track considered here is at no immediate risk of settlement effect or any failure, the regular monitoring of track’s location will allow early correction maintenance if necessary. The developed data of track formation clearly shows the similarity of the side view with the assessed track. The data visualization in the 2D section of the track embankment agreed well with the initial assumption based on the main element structure general side view.

Authors: Sharmeelee Subramaniam, Muhd Harris Ramli, Fauziah Ahmad

Abstract:

The application of vacuum pressure to accelerate ground consolidation has been growing significantly in recent years. This ground improvement technique has its advantages, especially in areas where suitable fill is scarce, as it minimizes the surcharge fill height required for the preloading. A study was carried out to examine the response of soft subsoil subjected to vacuum consolidation in combination with embankment loading, surcharge preloading and PVD with two-way drainage. This paper shall describe a procedure to determine the optimum surcharge height and penetration depth of prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) where vacuum consolidation is combined with the use of PVD in soft clay deposits with two-way drainage.

Authors: Muhd. Barzani Gasim, Mohd. Ekhwan Toriman, Mohd. Khairul Amri Kamarudin, Azman Azid, Siti Humaira Haron, Muhammad Hafiz Md. Saad

Abstract:

Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia that constantly exposed to flooding and landslide. The disaster has caused some troubles such loss of property, loss of life and discomfort of people involved. This problem occurs as a result of climate change leading to increased stream flow rate as a result of disruption to regional hydrological cycles. The aim of the study is to determine hydrologic processes in the east coasts of Peninsular Malaysia, especially in Kelantan Basin. Parameterized to account for the spatial and temporal variability of basin characteristics and their responses to climate variability. For hydrological modeling of the basin, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model such as relief, soil type, and its use, and historical daily time series of climate and river flow rates are studied. The interpretation of Landsat map/land uses will be applied in this study. The combined of SWAT and climate models, the system will be predicted an increase in future scenario climate precipitation, increase in surface runoff, increase in recharge and increase in the total water yield. As a result, this model has successfully developed the basin analysis by demonstrating analyzing hydrographs visually, good estimates of minimum and maximum flows and severe floods observed during calibration and validation periods.

Authors: Muhammad Zainuddin Arriafdi, Hamudah Hakimah Abdullah, Mohd Helmi Sani, Wan Azlina Ahmad, Muhd Nazrul Hisham Zainal Alam

Abstract:

The biotechnology process development demands numerous experimental works. In laboratory environment, this is typically carried out using a shake flask platform. This paper presents the design and fabrication of a miniature bioreactor system as an alternative research tool for bioprocessing. The working volume of the reactor is 100 ml, and it is made of plastic. The main features of the reactor included stirring control, temperature control via the electrical heater, aeration strategy through a miniature air compressor, and online optical cell density (OD) sensing. All sensors and actuators integrated into the reactor was controlled using an Arduino microcontroller platform. In order to demonstrate the functionality of such miniature bioreactor concept, series of batch Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation experiments were performed under various glucose concentrations. Results attained from the fermentation experiments were utilized to solve the Monod equation constants, namely the saturation constant, Ks, and cells maximum growth rate, μmax as to further highlight the usefulness of the device. The mixing capacity of the reactor was also evaluated. It was found that the results attained from the miniature bioreactor prototype were comparable to results achieved using a shake flask. The unique features of the device as compared to shake flask platform is that the reactor mixing condition is much more comparable to a lab-scale bioreactor setup. The prototype is also integrated with an online OD sensor, and as such, no sampling was needed to monitor the progress of the reaction performed. Operating cost and medium consumption are also low and thus, making it much more economical to be utilized for biotechnology process development compared to lab-scale bioreactors.

Abstract:

Energy efficiency can be realized by minimizing the power loss with a sufficient amount of energy used in an electrical distribution system. In this report, a detailed analysis of the energy efficiency of an electric distribution system was carried out with an implementation of the optimal capacitor placement and sizing (OCPS). The particle swarm optimization (PSO) will be used to determine optimal location and sizing for the capacitors whereas energy consumption and power losses minimization will improve the energy efficiency. In addition, a certain number of busbars or locations are identified in advance before the PSO is performed to solve OCPS. In this case study, three techniques are performed for the pre-selection of busbar or locations which are the power-loss-index (PLI). The particle swarm optimization (PSO) is designed to provide a new population with improved sizing and location of capacitors. The total cost of power losses, energy consumption and capacitor installation are the components considered in the objective and fitness functions of the proposed optimization technique. Voltage magnitude limit, total harmonic distortion (THD) limit, power factor limit and capacitor size limit are the parameters considered as the constraints for the proposed of optimization technique. In this research, the proposed methodologies implemented in the MATLAB® software will transfer the information, execute the three-phase unbalanced load flow solution and retrieve then collect the results or data from the three-phase unbalanced electrical distribution systems modeled in the SIMULINK® software. Effectiveness of the proposed methods used to improve the energy efficiency has been verified through several case studies and the results are obtained from the test systems of IEEE 13-bus unbalanced electrical distribution system and also the practical electrical distribution system model of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (SSAAS) government building in Shah Alam, Selangor.
