3 Potency of Some Dietary Acidifiers on Productive Performance and Controlling Salmonella enteritidis in Broilers

Authors: Mohamed M. Zaki, Maha M. Hady

Abstract:

Salmonella spp. have been categorized as the world’s biggest threats to human health and poultry products are mostly incriminated sources. In Egypt, it was found that S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium are the most prevalent ones in poultry farms. It is recommended to eliminate salmonella from living bird by competing for salmonella contamination in feed in order to establish a healthy gut. The Feed acidifiers are the group of feed additives containing low-molecular-weight organic acids and/ or their salts which act as performance promoters by lowering the pH in the gut, optimizes digestion and inhibit bacterial growth. The inclusion of organic acid in pure form nonetheless effective in feed, yet, it is difficult to handle in feed mills as it is corrosive and produce more losses during pelleting process. The current study aimed at to evaluate the impact of incorporation of sodium diformate (SDF) and a commercial acidifier, CA (a mixture of butyric and propionic acids and their ammonium salts) at 0.4% dietary levels on broilers performance and the control S. enteritidis infection. Two hundreds and seventy unsexed cobb chickens were allotted in one of three treatments (90/ group) which were, the control (no acidifier, C- &C+), the 0.4% SDF (SDF- & SDF +) and the 0.4% CA (CA- & CA +) dietary levels for 35 days. Before the allocation of the groups, ten extra birds and a diet sample were bacteriologically examined to ensure negative contamination with salmonella. The birds were raised on deep-litter separated pens and had free access to feed and water all the time. The experimentally formulated diets were kept at 40C. After 24h access to the different dietary treatments, all the birds in the positive groups (n=15/ replicate) were inoculated intra-crop with 0.2 ml of 24 h broth culture of S. entertidis containing 1X 107 organisms while the negative-treated groups were inoculated with the same amount of the negative broth and second inoculation was done at 22 d of age. Colocal swabs were collected individually from all birds 2 h pre-inoculation to assure the absence of salmonella, then 1, 3, 5, 7, 21 days post-inoculation to recover salmonella. Performance parameter (body weight gain and feed efficiency) were calculated. Mortalities were recorded and reisolation of the salmonella was adopted to ensure it was the inoculated ones. The results revealed that the dietary acidification with sodium diformate significantly improved broilers performance and tends to produce heavier birds as compared to the negative control and CA groups. Moreover, the dietary inclusion of both acidifiers at level of 0.4% was able to eliminate mortalities completely at the relevant inoculation time. Regarding the shedding of S. enteritidius in positive groups, the SDF treatment resulted in significant (p<0.05) cessation of the shedding at 3 days post-inoculation compared to 7 days post-inoculation for the CA-group. In conclusion, sodium diformate at 0.4% dietary level in broiler diets has a valuable effect not only on broilers performance but also by eliminating S. enteritidis the main source of salmonella contamination in poultry farms which is feed.

Abstract:

In this modernised era, the use of technology is vital for everyone as it undoubtedly eases daily lives. However, the introduction of technology has caused many students to lose interest in difficult subjects such as science and mathematics because they cannot fully apply them in real life. Subsequently, they tend to take advantage of technology in pursuing their careers as a result of unnecessary internet exposure. As a counteract, the government has introduced STREAM education for those under the age of 7. Following this initiative, a rise towards interest in science is made visible, though not as significant as aimed. Therefore, this research is constructed to provide an improved alternative by merging technology and education so that youngsters can fall in love with science. It helps bring out the true potential of the kids while encouraging them to gain knowledge through a gamified education system. ILHAM is an app that segregates students into groups according to their class. Every 2 weeks, students are compelled to send pictures of their scientific wonders from their surroundings into files aligned to the topics in their syllabus. The score is evaluated by two aspects: the quality of the questions and the involvement of students in answering their peer’s questions. The marking guide for quality is branched into three aspects, that is, engagement, originality and complexity. In terms of the students' involvement, they were evaluated by the quantity and quality of the questions. Students are given 2 weeks to upload and answer questions. All students from the class are open to answering the questions by sending the answers to a designated file. Teachers in a diverse community will evaluate the answers through active discussion and the help of artificial intelligence to count the marks of each student. At the end of the 2 weeks, points will be accumulated and recorded for annual collection. Students will be given points that will be recorded and are crucial for their secondary school admission. Fast forward, they may receive respective certificates of achievement based on points they have collected throughout the year, which assists in secondary school admission to spark student’s interest in the science field whilst improving the admissions of the nation’s prestigious school. Through ILHAM, students are able to understand events around them with scientific theories. Hence, students tend to question more about the world, subsequently creating higher-level thinkers. Other than that, students will be aware that they can learn by just being present, such as sitting next to a fan and wondering how it blows air. Students strive for knowledge from a young age, producing critical thinkers that innovate the world further. Moreover, students will achieve higher grades in school as they wonder about scientific topics whilst trying to master them through the existence of ILHAM. Lastly, this app allows scientists from around the globe to discuss and generate new ideas that might change the world.

1 West Meets Islam in Contemporary World, Leadership Perspective

Abstract:

Islam is a way of life than merely a religion that covers all facets of Muslim affairs and lifes. It provides the most comprehensive values, principles and guidance that are based on divine sources to all mankind in all spheres including leadership. Islamic leadership is all encompassing and holistic model of leadership that offers the tauhidic paradigm, spiritual and ethical (akhlaq) dimensions that are absent in the modern conventional leadership theories. Islamic leadership has a glorious history of great success from the era of the Prophet S.A.W. and the following caliphs that had conquered almost one third of the world territory during that time, as their leadership was paragon of excellence that followed to the spirits and teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah. As the modern civilisation designed by the West takes place, the modern leadership theories has been dominating the world and literature including those in the Muslim countries. However, it is clear that values and principles derived from Islam and the West are distinct, as the Islamic ones are based on divine, the non-Islamics are not indeed as there are based on human rational and judgement. Recent development in business organisations and literature have seen the tendency towards moral, ethical, even spiritual and positive form of leadership such as servant leadership, ethical leadership, authentic leadership and spiritual leadership that found its root in the Islamic model of leadership. This development has surfaced after series of serious ethical dilemma, corporate scandals and leadership crisis in the West. This paper aims to draw a comparative discussions and analysis between the modern conventional leadership theories with the Islamic leadership by highlighting the key dimensions that distinguish the two. It is suggested in this paper that the core dimensions of Islamic leadership are spiritual dimension, moral and ethical dimension and physical dimension which is also paralleled with the roles of khalifah of Allah on earth; relationship with Allah, relationship with human beings and relationship with the environment respectively.
