Metaphorical Usage of Temperature Terms in Mandarin Chinese Within the Realm of Interpersonal Relationship: A Cultural Linguistics Perspective
Authors: Jinhuang Zhang
Abstract:
This research, grounded in the framework of Cultural Linguistics, delves into the metaphorical utilization of temperature terms within Mandarin Chinese. The domain under scrutiny in this study is ‘Interpersonal Relationships’. Through an in-depth examination of the metaphorical manifestations of temperature terms in this particular domain, the concealed cultural conceptualizations that give rise to such usages are meticulously unraveled. The predominant cultural metaphors emerging in the domain of ‘Interpersonal Relationships’ are ‘Distance As Temperature’ and ‘Connection As Temperature’, which offer profound insights into the cognitive mappings of interpersonal associations within the Chinese cultural context. This investigation thereby enriches our understanding of the intricate interplay between language, culture, and metaphorical thought patterns in Mandarin Chinese. Keywords: Mandarin Chinese, temperature terms, metaphorical usage, cultural linguistics, cultural conceptualizations, interpersonal relationship
