The Right to City Between Theory and Practice

Abstract:

It is quite agreeable today to say that urban planning is not anymore, a mere physical process of construction and architecture. It is not just a right to land, or a right to public space, the right to enter the center or the right to services. Urbanity encompasses all these rights together. As well, the city is not just a place but a state of mind, a symbol of a unique way of life characterized by diversity and enjoyment, and it is difficult to fully define its meaning. Methodology. The article defines and maps the right for a city, its theoretical meanings and approaches. It discusses standards for achieving a Just City- equality, democracy and diversity- and the complicity of ensuring them in practice. Conclusion. The article shows that realizing the right for a city involves political, economic, social and cultural aspects that might disturb the mission of planning a just city. Nevertheless, the article argues that the realization of the right to a just city is possible.
