Abstract:

In recent decades, academic integrity has emerged as a focal point in higher education, prompting increased scrutiny and action against student cheating behavior. This paper presents a thorough examination of research on student cheating, delving into the motivations driving such behavior, students' perceptions of academic integrity, and the efficacy of preventative measures. Drawing from a diverse array of literature, including empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and institutional practices, this paper contextualizes academic integrity historically, assesses the prevalence of cheating in higher education, and elucidates the myriad factors influencing student attitudes toward cheating. Moreover, the paper scrutinizes the impact of preventative interventions, ranging from educational initiatives and institutional policies to technological innovations, in bolstering academic integrity and curbing cheating tendencies. Through synthesizing existing research and charting future trajectories, this paper provides invaluable insights for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders keen on fortifying academic integrity in higher education and nurturing a climate of integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct among students. Ultimately, the findings underscore the necessity for a multifaceted approach that includes continuous assessment, adaptation of strategies, and fostering a supportive academic environment to effectively combat academic dishonesty. By doing so, it seeks to empower institutions to create sustainable and integrity-driven educational environments for future generations.
