Monitoring the Wear of Cutting Tools in Milling Applications

Abstract:

Monitoring of cutting tools in milling applications is essential for achieving the desired quality of machined parts. Frequent manual inspection of cutting tools by skilled operators is time consuming and hence costly in terms of productivity lost due to undesirable stoppages of machine tools. It is highly desirable to develop a reliable method to monitor online the condition of cutting tool and alert the operator when cutting tools need replacing. The present study is concerned with the development of an artificial technique to monitor the condition of cutting tools in milling applications. The results of this study show that the proposed technique can detect when the cutting tool is severely worn. These findings are significant in that they could help machine tool’s operator diagnose the condition of cutting tools without the need for frequent machine stoppage to perform manual inspections of cutting tools, resulting in a significant decrease in manufacturing costs.
