Piscopo","country":null,"institution":"","volume":46,"journal":"International Journal of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering","pagesStart":1010,"pagesEnd":1018,"ISSN":"1307-6892","URL":"https:\/\/publications.waset.org\/pdf\/119","abstract":"In the classical buckling analysis of rectangular plates\r\nsubjected to the concurrent action of shear and uniaxial forces, the\r\nEuler shear buckling stress is generally evaluated separately, so that\r\nno influence on the shear buckling coefficient, due to the in-plane\r\ntensile or compressive forces, is taken into account.\r\nIn this paper the buckling problem of simply supported rectangular\r\nplates, under the combined action of shear and uniaxial forces, is\r\ndiscussed from the beginning, in order to obtain new project formulas\r\nfor the shear buckling coefficient that take into account the presence\r\nof uniaxial forces.\r\nFurthermore, as the classical expression of the shear buckling\r\ncoefficient for simply supported rectangular plates is considered only\r\na \u201crough\" approximation, as the exact one is defined by a system of\r\nintersecting curves, the convergence and the goodness of the classical\r\nsolution are analyzed, too.\r\nFinally, as the problem of the Euler shear buckling stress\r\nevaluation is a very important topic for a variety of structures, (e.g.\r\nship ones), two numerical applications are carried out, in order to\r\nhighlight the role of the uniaxial stresses on the plating scantling\r\nprocedures and the goodness of the proposed formulas.","references":null,"publisher":"World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology","index":"Open Science Index 46, 2010"}
